Mark guides us through the squats, the parties, the riots and the ten years in Berlin from his arrival in 1979 through to 1989. This is a walled-in Berlin in its final days. A playground and sanctuary for the dispossessed. A sensory visual and auditory overload!
An extraordinarily eclectic and creative character, Mark is a musician, record producer, remixer, DJ, graphic designer and film maker. Originally from Manchester, his clandestine musical career has spanned over more than four decades, from founding member of The Frantic Elevators, with Mick Hucknall (Simply Red), to the German representative for Joy Division and legendary Manchester record label Factory Records from 1978-1983.

However it wasn't until the 1970's that Newton established his signature aesthetic and modus operandi; a willingness to depict unflinching sexuality and a highly-erotic version of female confidence. Newton enabled fashion photography to depict a more human and carnal version of the typically staid and stylized models. Newton was also credited with helping fashion photography leave the studio and absorb/document the vitality of the street...and the bedroom.
"Young Woman and Bismarck Monument, Berlin" was taken in the summer of 1979, after Newton was sent to Berlin by German Vogue. June, his wife, fellow photographer and essential collaborator, came up with the idea of revisiting spots Newton cherished during in his youth. Remarkably most of the sites, despite the epic destruction of the city during the war, were relatively intact including the Bismarck monument. These images, and "Bismark Monument" is a paradigm are fascinating for their unlikely combination of nostalgia and sexuality.
Like the best of Newton's work, this image has allusions to Film Noir, BDSM and of course the Femme Fatale. The suite of images that German Vogue published are some of the most iconic and celebrated images from Helmut Newton's career.
Today, Newton's works can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Library of Australia in Canberra, the International Center of Photography in New York and the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which was established in 2003.

Jill Furmanovsky recalls, "Sounds commissioned journalist Ian Birch and I to accompany Siouxsie and the Banshees on a promo jaunt to Berlin in Feb 1979. The band had a promo gig at the KantKino and I had a chance to shoot the soundcheck, admiring the sheer elegance of Sioux dressed like an Amani model in a beige suit. That night a few of us took a walk around the perimiter of the Berlin wall which loomed bleakly in the frozen foggy light. The next day we did a shoot with the whole band in various places and then Siouxsie and Steve Severin went to the famous Berlin zoo where I took pictures. Siouxsie is a real animal lover and pretty knowledgeable too."

B-movie: Lust & Sound In West-Berlin 1979-1989
(dir. Jrg A. Hoppe / Heiko Lange / Klaus Maek, Germany 2015, 92 mins)
Music, art and chaos in the wild West-Berlin of the 1980s. The walled-in city became the creative melting pot for sub and pop culture. Before the iron curtain fell, everything and anything seemed possible. This fast-paced collage of mostly unreleased film and TV footage from a frenzied but creative decade, starts with punk and ends with the Love Parade, in a city where the days are short and the nights are endless.
Live: Lone Taxidermist
Welcome to the world of Lone Taxidermist: a chaotic realm of poisonous cocktails, thwarted lust, 6am dancehalls and a cast of characters standing on the verge of epiphany. This world was created by Natalie Sharp, part northern poet, part cosmic synth diva, part London nightbus chonicler. She is joined in this endeavour by Philip Winter (Wrangler/Tunng), Will Kwerk and Hjordis moon Badford.
Gerdt Kutscher, a Berlin scholar of Amerindian studies, was long associated with the Ibero-American Institute (1934-1979), last serving as research director (from 1970 on) and deputy director (1974-78). His research activities were centered on the Chimu and Moche cultures of Peru, work on the Lehmann Papers and studies of Mesoamerica. The Kutscher Papers consist of eighty-nine ring binders and boxes containing manuscripts, notes on scholarly works, lectures, book projects, drawings, personal papers, photographs, audio tapes, as well as documents from Kutscher's activities at the IAI and as a professor at the Latin American Institute of the Free University of Berlin. They also include a large number of manuscripts and texts by other Berlin specialists in Amerindian studies. The collection is an important source of information on the history of Amerindian studies in Berlin. An inventory was drawn up by G. Vollmer in 1987.
But when the skates arrived, it turned out, that they are perfect preserved 1970s roller skates in their original state. Inside the Riedell boots, model 120, the year of manufacturing is stamped: 1979. I could imagine the roller girl, who put off these skates in 1979 after roller skating in Venice Beach on a sunny summer day. So I called them Roller-Boogie-Skates, after the 1979 skate movie Roller Boogie, starring Linda Blair.
