Yesterday I visited an Adirondack Bog in St. Lawrence County, always thinking of bog elfin at this time of year. Alas…no bog elfin. But Eastern pine, brown, and Henry’s were there, brown and Henry’s often nectaring on leatherleaf. And many northern azures, as well as red admirals, American lady’s, on the outskirts. This is the third ADK bog where I’ve found Henry’s elfin (pic
here) while looking for bog elfin in May. I strongly suspect it is much more common in this habitat than has been recognized in NY (as it is in the province of Ontario). Probably should have its status in NY reconsidered - it is not an S1.
