The observance of the Ratha Yatra of Jagannath dates back to the period of the Puranas. Vivid descriptions of this festival are found in Brahma PuranaPadma Purana, and Skanda Purana. Kapila Samhita also refers to Ratha Yatra. In Moghul period also, King Ramsingh of JaipurRajasthan has been described as organizing the Ratha Yatra in the 18th Century. In Orissa, Kings of Mayurbhanj and Parlakhemundi were organizing the Rath Yatra, though the most grand festival in terms of scale and popularity takes place at Puri.

It is the well-known Indian Philosophy that eternal bliss can be realized through union with the Divine. Yet this Divine, though its invincible power is omnipotent, is incomprehensible. While it is hard to comprehend, we find ways to experience the feeling of emancipation. Ratha Yatra finds the means to experience this joy. It is believed that by touching the chariot or hauling the ropes of the chariots, is an act of service for the Lord Jagnnath. The very act of submitting to that service purifies one of all sins and leads the path to emancipation from the cycle of birth and death.

Please join us for the Ratha Yatra this year at 6:00 pm @ the NY Kali Mandir premises on Sunday June 29. We will be taking Subhadra and Jagannath through the streets of Baldwin. You will find it immensely rewarding and joyful. After the Yatra, we will have Arati and dinner.
