In exhorting Arjuna to fight the righteous battle with the Kauravas, Sri Krishna explains that whenever the world is awash with "adharma", God comes down to earth to rid it of evil. The birth of Krishna has to be seen in that light - when Kangsa ran amuck with cruelty and inflicted suffering on his subjects, time was ripe for divine intervention, and it came in the form of Sri Krishna.
Janmashtami is the celebration of Sri Krishna's birth, in spite of the cruel conceitedness of Kangsa, and the devilish watch of Puthana. The shackles restraining Vasudeva came apart, the gates of prison opened up and a path got formed through a turbulent Yamuna to the other sides to the safe confines of Gokul!
At New York Kali Mandir, we will celebrate Janmashtami on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 5:00 PM EST.
