Hey Everyone,

John and I discussed the addition of Categories to the Pro-Con Format. Here is the tentative list of what we plan on organizing the Pro-Cons into:

1.) Law
2.) Policy
3.) Education
4.) Business
5.) Economics
6.) Environmental
7.) Politics
8.) Entertainment and Culture

If anyone has any objections or additions to the categories listed above please reply all to this e-mail so we can discuss and settle on a final list for Neville.

Thanks!

It’s possible we could collapse some of the categories further, welcome suggestions on this.  jaj

Hi,

After looking over the tentative Pro-Con Categories, I think that we do not need eight categories. I know that Politics and Policy is split because Politics refers to people in Congress and Policy refers to  public/ foreign policy. However, based on the list now, there is no pro-con focusing on a specific individual. If you were to do a Pro-Con report about individual, wouldn't you be reporting on their perspective and votes about certain policies anyway? I think it is splitting hairs and will overlap too much. It should either be Politics or Policy (preferably Policy). I have the same view for Business and Economics.

Ashley

Well when you look at things like the Pro-Con on the Fillibuster, the Two Party System, or Campaign Financing; those are Politics Pro-Cons.

I may agree with you when it comes to combining Law & Policy into one category because policy is law and law may also be policy issues like Marijuana legalization or gun control.

I agree with Ashley that 8 Categories is too much, especially at launch. Here is the revised category list I think we should go with.

1) Law & Policy
2) Business & Economics
3) Politics
4) Education
5) Energy & Environment
6) Entertainment & Culture

Let me know what you think.

We agree the modified category list is much better than the first list. However, we still think the Law&Policy and Politics are so similar. Law & Policy is basically all encompassing on its own.

Here is DC's list

1. Government ( encompasses Law, Policy, Politics)
2. Business &Economics
3. Education
4. Energy& Environment
5. Entertainment& Culture
6. Civil Rights & Liberties

Civil Rights & Liberties should be included under policy.  Also, this website is based on Law and Policy, it would be a mistake to combine both of those into one generic category.

I agree -- Law and Policy definitely needs to be separated from Politics. They are two very different things.

To reiterate: Politics encompasses campaigns/elections, happenings in Congress, elected officials, etc. Law and Policy includes public policy issues, and changes to the law. Civil rights and liberties would be included in law and policy.

I would go with Robb's latest categories that he emailed.

I agree. I think we need Categories where we can ensure that they can be populated with at least two pro-con's in each section.

I agree that Civil Rights and Civil Liberties fit into policy and that having Government as a generic category is not a great idea. As a law & policy website we need to separate Law & Policy from Politics.

I think the final list should remain at the 6 I mentioned before. I can show John both lists and he can make the final call.
