I want to jailbreak an iPhone 3G which I believe is locked to AT & T. It
is iOS 4.2.1 (8C148) and belongs to a friend of mine. Jailbreaking will
be done with latest redsn0w and IPSW for this phone.

Here are my questions -- the phone has baby photos on it, etc. I don't
want to risk these while jailbreaking. I am wondering how to back up the
phone first.

I have already used TinyUmbrella to back up the SHSH blobs.

I have a MacBook Pro. Can I just plug the phone into the MacBook while
logged in to my personal user account, and see if I can back it up with
iTunes? Or should I create a special "test" user account and log into
that and then plug the phone in?

Will iTunes ask me for any passwords? I don't know the friend's
passwords and don't wish to ask, either. Can I still back up even
without a password?

Thanks

Use iTunes to back up your apps and music, and Image Capture or iPhoto
to backup your photos.
Warning though, you'll have issues with iTunes if the computer you're
using is not synced to the phone.

Download all the baby photos using ImageCapture. Just plug the phone
in and manually get the photos off using the program if you are on
another computer.

As for the Jailbreak-- yea, its going to clean out the phone, so if
you're not able to be attached to the original user's iTunes account,
something will go missing.

ImageCapture will let you copy the pics at minimum, so those will be
safe. :)

I've been using an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 3G (ios 3.1.3 ) for the
past 2 years.
Reluctant to do the ios 4 upgrade because of the slowness horror
stories and such.
I was just about ready to give up on the thing and upgrade to a new
phone, but last week I stumbled across the Whited00r firmware bundle.
I highly recommend it. The new OS has given new life to the old phone
in speed and also adding a bunch of better features above and beyond
what Apple offers.

Check it out at www.whited00r.com
Warning: there are a lot of deceptive banner ads on the site which
disguise themselves as download buttons when they are really not. (if
you have adblock plugin for your browser you won't see them though).
To save time and bypass the ads, here are direct url's to the two
firmware image download links:
