Hey, has anyone here ever tried to build an R2D2 robot, or something like that? I was thinking it would be an awesome senior project when I have a ton of time.... none now though :(

It's costly.

Check out astromech.net

Basically you want to join up with other builders on there for some of the parts runs.  Stuff like domes become significantly cheaper when you do bulk runs.

The runs however can occur years apart depending on the component.  So it can sometimes be difficult to source things.

There's also some levels of standardization in fittings and components.  Also a lot of CAD and design info there.

I think from what I've seen you'll spend a minimum of 5k on a full droid.

I've got the dome and legs purchased but I keep missing the boat on an aluminum frame parts run.

One of these days I'll have time to continue that project.

I'm in the 501st Legion, a star wars costumed charity organization.  I built stormtrooper armor, and it took a while.   A few members I know are also members of the r2 builders group.  the resource site you're looking for is astromech.net.  Everyone who does runs of parts there does it at no profit.  For a top notch one, you're looking at a months of work and about $7000.    It's a big project, but well worth it and loved by all.  A few of my friends are working on theirs, but it seriously takes a lot of time and effort, and will typically take years to complete.
