advice on a heat gun for acrylic bending

Hello all. i'm hoping someone can help me with some advice on a purchase. i have no experience with bending acrylic and so i'm not sure which heat gun i should be looking at. There are a bunch at http://www.mcmaster.com/#heat-guns/=kh8kqt

i will always be working with less than 1/4" thickness. I appreciate the help.

I just heated mine by waving it over a stove burner. Wasn't doing any fine with, tho, just putting 180 in a 2 x 7 piece of quarter inch.

Hey Alpay,

I have loads of experience with heat forming acrylic, with a gun, a heat strip, and vacuum forming (with 1/8" thick acrylic usually). I actually have this gun (model H): http://www.mcmaster.com/#heat-guns/=kh8sy4

I have experienced that hotter guns will begin to make the acrylic bubble and warp. What are you specifically trying to do?

Betsy, oh my, lots of projects on your site, i can't wait to go through them with a closer eye.

the link you provided didn't work (mcmaster's site keeps snapping back to a page of all the heat guns). can you tell me the name please?

I am laser cutting leaves  and planned to build a little jig to bend the leaf tips... but i also have grand visions of doing all kind of bends for other projects. nothing big (like furntiure), probably always smaller items for decor. i'm usually building small consoles of buttons/displays or doing decor for an environment. and sometimes it's for retail or trade show so i'm aiming for a clean polished look.

Economy Heat Gun #H has gotten me through so many different acrylic-molding projects. Good also to have heat resistant gloves... the whole process takes some practice, but becomes easy with understanding the material.

Betsy, I'm looking to do some fairly large acrylic vacuum forming (2 foot spheres for outdoor christmas ornaments) - Do you have a cheap source for 1/8 acrylic?

Hi Rob,

In NYC I go to Canal Plastics, and in Los Angeles I go to Solter Plastics. In Fact, Solter Plastics has the best array of acrylic colors in the entire US (that I've found, anyways). They ship pretty much anywhere I believe, but you may have to purchase the full sheet size which is something around 5x9 ft.
