Edward Kleban, the lyricist of A Chorus Line and other extraordinary works, created the Kleban Prize in his Will, which is given annually to writers of extraordinary promise – to a librettist and a lyricist, respectively. Kleban designed the prize based on his personal experience as a promising writer. He was acutely aware that, though composers and musicians may often work within the theater, lyricists and librettists generally have to work outside the theater in order to support their writing. He wanted a prize of sufficient size to allow promising writers the time to simply write; his creation of the prize flowed from his desire to help other worthy artists like himself.

*** TRIPLE THREAT ***
In performing arts and musical theatre, you’ll often hear the term triple threat. It describes a performer who can act, sing, and dance to a professional standard. But being a triple threat is more than ticking three skill boxes. It’s about blending storytelling, vocal expression, and movement into one cohesive, compelling performance. It’s the ability to shift gears effortlessly, meeting the demands of today’s theatre and screen industry, where versatility isn’t just valued, it’s expected.

Triple-threat actress Sutton Foster gave a spirited and captivating performance in the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on Feb. 8. Even though the concert was not heavily publicized, Foster still drew in a large and enthusiastic audience with her reputation as a Broadway powerhouse.
Known for her Tony Award-winning leading roles on Broadway as Millie Dillmount in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (2002),Reno Sweeneyin “Anything Goes”(2011) and her origination of the role of Fiona in “Shrek the Musical” (2008), Foster also stars on TV Land’s comedy-drama “Younger” (2015) where she plays the role of Liza Miller, the show’s protagonist. According to Foster, she only films “Younger” for four months out of the year, leaving her a lot of time to pursue her singing career and go on concert tours.
The concert was opened by a short set of speeches by Department of Music Chair Richard Jankowsky and University President Anthony Monaco, both of whom were in attendance that evening. University benefactors Perry and Marty Granoff were graciously recognized by Jankowsky and Monaco for their contributions to the Department of Music and for making Foster’s concert possible.

He's the quintessential triple threat
Neil Patrick Harris can sing and dance his heart out for eight minutes straight without missing a beat, or losing his breath. Harris flipped, jumped and cracked jokes through the elaborate opening number for the 2013 Tony Awards — achieving a lengthy standing ovation from the talented audience members.

Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland was a rare true triple threat, holding her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, twice receiving Oscar nominations in acting categories, as well as leaving behind a legacy of record-breaking concerts, a Grammy-winning gold album and recordings of iconic songs that no one else has ever been able to capture in quite the same way.

Rita Moreno has worn the distinguished crown of EGOT-winner since 1977, garnering several lifetime achievement awards after that. An actor, singer and dancer, the triple threat has had an illustrious, eight-decade career and has advocated for Hispanic representation on stage and screen. But, as she shares in a recent episode of “Portrait Mode with Sophie Elgort,” she didn’t know at the start of her journey what her impact would be.

Last month I attended a preview of what’s planned as a one-hour documentary to show newbies and remind old-timers just how marvelous Verdon really was. So why say “merely marvelous”? In Redhead, Verdon sang a song called “I Feel Merely Marvelous” so the three filmmakers obviously mean it in semi-ironic fashion; there was nothing “merely” about Verdon’s stage presence and personality.
“We were afraid that the greatest triple threat in Broadway history would be forgotten,” says Bloom. “So we tracked down many people who’d worked with her: John Kander, Chita Rivera, Harvey Evans, Charlotte d’Amboise, and her son James Henaghan. They told us stories that haven’t been often told, so even the most dedicated fans will discover things they didn’t know.”
Added Johnson, “Many are aware that she was the first performer to win four Tonys in a row with losing one. Not many, though, probably know that she and Carol Haney dubbed the tapping for Gene Kelly in that famous ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ number.”
