HAPPY NEW YEAR!

*** FREE THEATER IN NYC ***

The Library for the Performing Arts Play Club [IN PERSON]
ENGLISH by Sanaz Toossi

Play Club is like a book club, but for plays! Whether you are familiar with the art of reading plays, or looking to expand your appreciation for dramatic literature, this book club is an opportunity to read plays you have been meaning to explore or have never considered reading before. Learn about new works, discover new playwrights, and make friends!

English takes place in 2008, as four Iranians assemble tri-weekly in a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) class in Karaj, Iran. The students are led by Marjan, an anglophile who abolishes Farsi from her classroom. They translate Ricky Martin and endure major preposition confusion; they discover how to be funny in English and ponder what they will lose in the process. As the class slowly devolves into a linguistic mess, some students cling tighter to their mother tongue while others embrace the possibilities of a new language.

We have a few copies of the play available at the Library for the Performing Arts, but if you are looking for additional copies, the Drama Book Shop has graciously set aside copies of the play at a discounted price of 10% off for Play Club attendees. (While supplies last. Please visit the Drama Book Shop to purchase your copy.

*** OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAYWRIGHTS ***

Clubbed Thumb is pleased to announce our next Biennial Commission. This year we lost one of our great comic dramatists: Christopher Durang. We’ve been reflecting on how powerful and much-needed savage humor like his is in a world like ours today. So, for the 10th Biennial Commission, please consider his work, especially from the 1980’s. We read Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You, Beyond Therapy, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, and Baby with the Bathwater, but feel free to engage with any of his work.

Almost Adults Productions is open for submissions for their next production April 11 and 12th at Teatro Paraguas in Santa Fe, NM.  People Have the Power will be a short play staged-reading program with the theme of social activism; individuals who make an impact on their communities and in the world at large. This is inspired by the Patti and Fred Smith song by the same name.

EXIT Theatre seeks short plays no longer than 15 minutes in length for its 2025 Short Play Festival which will be held June 19-29, 2025 at EXIT Theatre in Arcata, Ca. All theatrical performance styles will be considered that can be comfortably staged in our low-tech, low budget 30-seat theater.

*** NEW YEAR AFFIRMATIONS FOR WRITERS ***

An affirmation is simply a sentence reflecting a belief that is usually read out loud. The theory behind this is that by repeating a positive statement repeatedly, you eventually lead your subconscious to take the idea on board. This may sound a little out there, but it’s a technique that some of the most successful people in the world swear by.

Let’s consider an example to clarify the concept. Let’s say that every morning, while looking in the mirror, you tell yourself out loud “I am a skillful writer.” This is an example of an affirmation. The theory goes that as you repeat the affirmation over and over, it sinks into the depths of your subconscious and you end up acting as a successful writer.

“I am a great writer and my words have power.”

This affirmation reminds us of our capabilities as writers and it reinforces our belief in ourselves. It helps to create an attitude of self-confidence and empowerment that can carry over into our work.

"My writing will touch the hearts of many."

This affirmation allows us to focus on the impact our words have, rather than dwelling on any potential shortcomings or negative feedback. Knowing that others will be moved by our work helps to keep us motivated and inspired.

"I honor my creativity and listen to its guidance."

This affirmation serves as a reminder that our creativity is special, unique, and important. It encourages us to embrace our creative spark and trust in its wisdom. We can always turn to it for inspiration or guidance when we need it.

Affirmations motivate us and focus our minds on our goals, whether it’s finishing the play you’ve been working on since the beginning of the pandemic, or finding a producer to read your script. For example, repeating the phrase “I will produce a successful show” to yourself will make your brain believe it, and therefore, you will, both consciously and subconsciously, work towards that goal and be more likely to achieve it.

Here are some tips for how to use affirmations successfully:

Consistency is key! You don’t want to say an affirmation 100 times in one day, and then not again for another month. Try repeating ones that resonate with you five times each, every morning.

Look at yourself in the mirror while you do it. This will make you really feel like you’re talking to yourself.

Center yourself before and after reciting by taking deep breaths. Affirmations are a meditative process, and they work best when your mind isn’t wandering to what you’re gonna eat for dinner, or what’s on your to-do list for the day.

I am free to make my own choices.

I am free from the judgement of others.

Move and the way will open. Write and the story will appear.

Writing is important, and at the same time, it is not important at all. No one’s life is in my hands. The fates of nations do not rest on my words or deeds. I am
writing a story. I can relax while also giving it my best effort.

I love composing affirmations for writers. In fact, you can get affirmations from me sent to you via text every Monday morning by texting the word AFFIRM to 205-892-9501.

A dear friend of mine once told me she hated affirmations, and she said reciting them felt like she was lying to herself.

I understood exactly what she meant.

Repeating some random affirmations that you found on Instagram probably won’t work for you if the words aren’t speaking to your truth, your values, and to your specific situation.

That’s why I’m a big fan of writing my own affirmations. Sure, I may look to other affirmations for inspiration, but I write my own so they will feel authentic. So if you sign up for my text message affirmations, use those to spark ideas for your own mantras.

But for my friend, her issue with affirmations was even deeper. When times were tough, she had a hard time repeating statements declaring that all things work together for her good.

I will go to war for my art! Today, I will call my congressional representative about criminalizing leaf blowers so that I have much better writing conditions.

The spirits of the ancient masters flow through me! Borges and Woolf. Twain and Plath. I’ll never be as good as them, and that’s completely fine.

I grant myself what I need to write today: Inbox zero. 16 boxes of tissues arranged in a pyramid. 137 house plants, watered and spritzed. These are my holy preconditions for writing a single noun phrase.

My ideas are endless. My inspiration unstoppable. My focus unbreaka — Hey, I wonder what happens if I do a YouTube search for “hippo versus rhino”?
