THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK
Dramatic Reading with music by Robert Kurka
Jaroslav Hašek’s (1883 – 1923) famous novel The Good Soldier Švejk (Schweik) is a classic of world literature and has been translated into 58 languages. When the young stage director Erwin Piscator (1893 – 1966), founder of political and epic theater, was looking for a play dealing with the gruesome reality of war and couldn’t find one that satisfied his demands, he decided to adapt Hašek’s novel for the stage. A whole collective of writers worked on this adaptation, including Bertolt Brecht, Max Brod, Felix Gasbarra, Leo Lania, and Hans Reimann. The play premiered in 1928 at the Piscatorbühne in Berlin to enormous critical acclaim.
The event is organised by Elysium - Between Two Continents and Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York with the support of Czech Center New York.
Tuesday, Mar 24 from 7 pm to 9 pm

Veterans' 10 Minute Playwrighting Contest 2026
All playwrights, regardless of military affiliation, are invited to enter Salem State University’s 10-Minute Playwriting Contest. However, preference will be given to those with a direct military connection. This includes active-duty military, reservists, National Guard, Veterans, and direct family of any of these.
The theme of the play should directly touch on military service and/or how military service affects a community. The contest and festival look to recognize and celebrate those that have served and currently serve. We are looking to bring together a variety of voices exploring both the challenges and the victories and positive influences that Veterans have on our community.

Left Coast Theatre Co. seeks short plays on the theme of QueerStories Throughout the Generations
From “Back in my day” to “Ok, Boomer,” each generation has plenty to say about the others. This anthology will explore relationships, tensions, and shared experiences between queer folk of various generations. While we anticipate including a couple pieces about members of an older generation teaching folk of a younger generation about their experience, we really encourage our writers to think of other ways to explore this theme.

Quiz: Ghosts in Shakespeare's plays
One of the many delights about the vast range of characters in Shakespeare’s plays is the fact that several of them are not even alive, but are ghosts—including such top apparitions as Banquo’s ghost from Macbeth or Hamlet’s father’s Ghost. Most of Shakespeare’s ghosts are murder victims, and some appear first alive and then dead within the same play, often played by the same actor. Challenge yourself with our haunting quiz about the phantoms and apparitions in the plays and how they are portrayed.
Shakespeare was not only a poet, a playwright, and a partner in his acting company but also an actor. A centuries-old tradition says that he played a ghost in one of his own plays, although we don't know if it's true. Which play was it?
King John
The Merry Wives of Windsor
Julius Caesar
Hamlet

1. Zohran Mamdani was elected the 111th mayor of New York City in November, after a campaign during which there was little talk of arts policy or Broadway. True or false: He did say he likes to sing along with Broadway show tunes, especially “Waving Through the Window” from “Dear Evan Hansen”
