On October 23, 2025, the East Wing of the White House was demolished—to make way for a ballroom. The demolition took place at the sole direction of its resident, who ignored a host of laws
on historic preservation and Capital planning which should have guided and informed substantive changes to the nation’s historic and architecturally significant property. The discussion aims to help us see the many holes left by this and other such tragic
acts—including erasures of images and stories from historic sites—all undertaken for what seems an attempt to recast underlying narratives. The panelists will comment on why the existing regulatory constraints may not work to protect our nation’s cultural
heritage.
