Just a reminder that nominations are open for this year's Administrator of the Year Award are open until March 15.

This award is designed to honor NYC Public Schools administrators who have demonstrated consistent support and dedication to journalism education and a sincere appreciation and commitment to student press rights.

The winning administrator will be invited to attend and speak at Press Pass NYC’s June celebration event.

In addition, the school’s journalism program will receive a $1,000 award.
All nominees and nominators must consent to the use of any nomination materials, including photos, in Press Pass NYC social media and publications.
Selection Process

To be eligible for nomination, an administrator must:

  • Currently work as an administrator (including principal, assistant principal, dean, and superintendent) in a New York City public high school or middle school with a student news publication.

  • Have served as a leader at a school with a student news publication for at least two full school years and demonstrate commitment to unwavering support in future years.

  • Agree to the nomination.

  • Demonstrate, as evidenced by letters of support from students and faculty and other documentation (such as published student articles; recognition from other agencies; and structure of the journalism program) included in the nomination materials, exemplary support for student journalism in ways such as:

    • Unwavering support, both in time and in aiding the acquisition of the needs of the journalism program.

    • Advocation for journalism activities within the school and New York City at large.

    • Support for the professional growth of the adviser by encouraging them to attend conferences and other professional development events.

    • Support for the educational growth of the students by encouraging them to attend conferences and seminars with student journalists from other schools.

    • Support for the academic standards of the journalism program and the enrollment of students therein.

    • Full appreciation and support for student press rights, including but not limited to honoring students’ rights to make editorial decisions independently of school administration.

As part of the nomination process, nominators will be asked to provide a nomination letter (and additional letters of support) along with basic contact information using the online form

Administrators may be nominated by their students, staff, parents, and/or community members. Administrators may not nominate themselves.

From the submitted administrators, a judging committee made up of representatives from Press Pass NYC will select the Administrator of the Year.

The submission window for contest entries runs from February 1 through March 15, 2026. Winners will be announced in April.

We look forward to reviewing all of your nominations!

Thank you!
- Lara
