Program dates: July 26-31, 2026, at Stony Brook University
This hands-on, six-day residential summer workshop is designed for high school sophomores and juniors considering careers in journalism and media production.

The workshop introduces students to skills in news reporting, writing, editing, video and still photography and podcasting.  All classes are taught by professional journalists. Students will live at the university residence halls and work in the School of Communication and Journalism’s multimedia newsroom and podcasting and television studios.  They will report as teams both on and off campus.

As a culminating activity, students will produce original work in text, video and still photography to be published on our website, GreeneGazette.com, and social media. NOTE: There is a fee of $1,500 to be paid upon acceptance, which will cover campus housing, meals, and tuition. Several need-based scholarships covering the total costs are available for students, so students are strongly encouraged to apply regardless of ability to pay.

The application deadline is March 6, 2026, but early applications are encouraged for the limited number of available spots. Students will need to include samples of their work they have completed in journalism or other subjects such as English, creative writing, history, media arts, or photography. They will also need a reference from a high school faculty member, such as a teacher or guidance counselor.
