Hi potential future housemates! We have two openings in a housing collective in the wonderful Kensington/Ditmas Park area. We are a three-year-old cooperative living home that values strong communities, embraces social justice values, and strives to create a home that's like family. We're looking for a November 1 or 15 move-in date to sign a one-year lease. The two rooms we have available are priced according to size, with one at $840 and the other at $890. Utilities and groceries/supplies are an additional $150/each per month on average.
We are in our early (early!) 30s with a commitment to cooperative living. As a small, five-person co-op, we are less structured than many communal living situations but we do share costs throughout the house including groceries and household supplies, and divide out care/maintenance of the house. We have a house meeting once a month to share a meal together, plan for the coming month, and share ideas about what we can do to help each other and improve the house.
While we're relatively small in numbers, our house is rather large for us. We like to share the wealth and be open to inviting trusted friends and guests to stay with us in our guest room or in one of the living rooms. We've made great new friends this way and enjoy being generous and gracious hosts.
When we say we like to "build community," we mean we like to share our space for things like: latke night, taco tuesday (or wednesday), backyard summer barbeques, the Flatbush Artist Studio Tour, hosting a workshop for SURJ, house concerts, birthday bashes, rehearsals, and whatever events or activities we think could use a home. We value clear and honest communication, open-heartedness, self-awareness, a love of laughter, and storytelling. While bringing family, friends, partners, and collaborators into our home is a gift all of us have cherished over the years, the most significant memories are with one another, in impromptu conversations in the kitchen, or snow days together where we all don't have to go to work.
