The New York State Chapter of ASMBS is holding their annual conference this Friday. Our own Rachel Goldman will be speaking about Psychological Challenges in the Bariatric Patient in the morning session. If you are an ASMBS NY chapter member, conference registration is free. Otherwise it is $35 for psychologists ("IH professionals"). Here is the link to more information about the conference http://asmbsny.org/conference/ In past years, I've found the conference to be interesting in some regards but geared primarily towards surgeons and those working in a surgery practice. Perhaps others who have attended in the past (Rachel, Warren?) can comment on their experience?

Hi All-

I will be speaking Thursday night from 7-8 as part of a panel on “challenging patients.” There are 3 vignettes being presented and the one most relevant to us is the third one which is on evaluating patients with Eating Disorders.

My opinion as to whether or not we should attend is a resounding “yes.” All such conferences are geared towards surgeons and medical professionals and even “allied health professionals” usually refers to nurses, office staff, and dieticians/nutritionists. However, I have always found attendees (including surgeons) to recognize the valuable contribution we make to to the bariatric team….especially when patients have issues after surgery (which we know they often do!). Also, if we as psychologists DO NOT attend, what influence can we possibly have going forward? Who will be our voice? So I recommend that you strongly consider attending, even though you may spend a few hours during the day listening to various professionals talk about issues that have little relevance to our work. Hope to see you there.

Regards-
Warren

Sounds like an interesting panel tonight, Warren. Unfortunately, I'm not able to attend tonight so I'll miss your talk. It is nice to see that we will have representation from two members of our group at the conference!

I strongly agree that it is important for us, as psychologists, to have a presence at the conference. It is an (unfortunate) reality that it falls on us bariatric psychologists to make our value known to the other members of the surgery team. Especially to highlight the fact that we can do so much more than just the required pre-op evaluation! Similar to Warren, I've also had the experience that attendees do value our contributions, when we bring them to their attention.

Hope to see some of you at the conference tomorrow. Did I mention it is free for ASMBS-NY members?

Hope both talks go well! I'm sorry that I can't attend either one of them.

Hi everyone,
I was wondering what online resources people are recommending to patients who are planning to have weight-loss surgery. I've been suggesting obesityhelp.com

TIA,
Ilana
