In several locations in the Union Square station, there are these red and
green hollow metal rectangles on the wall. Most of them have glass fronts,
some have a prism effect that makes them appear to be deeper than they are,
and some have writing on the inside flange. What are they?

I had included some pictures of one at the south end of the uptown NRWQ
platform, but I think the server disallowed the post b/c this isn't a binary
group. Sorry.

It's art.

They've been there at least 5 year. They're down on the platforms too.

Here are some of the things I thought they were for (besides decoration):

fire blanket storage
pipe chase
modular partition anchor points
mirrors to see around corners/different parts of the station

man, was I ever wrong. haha.

I'd like to see the pics though -- maybe you could put them on
a flickr.com account? (It's free.)

As the previously cited website says, they've been there since 1998.
They were installed during the station rehab. Remnants of the past are
framed.

The pics aren't worth it... I took them on my cell phone camera and they
look terrible. I had only posted them in case nobody knew what I was
talking about.

They tend to be rather narrow with a glass window and something behind it,
with mirrors to the sides on the inside and various lettering. Not something
that photographs well even with a flash.
