A TBI investigator checks evidence on the roof of the Stanley Cook's
sedan, which was parked in front of the Trimble municipal building.
A Trimble police officer shot and killed a local man Tuesday night in
front of the town's municipal building.

According to witnesses and law enforcement personnel, Robert Horner
fired several rounds into the parked car of Stanley Cook, 35, of
Trimble, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Cook was sitting in the front seat
of the gray sedan with the window rolled down when he was killed.

Investigators from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have taken
the lead in the case, as is policy whenever a law enforcement officer
is involved in an inquiry of criminal nature. TBI officials at the
scene declined to speak about the case.

Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Holt said his department was working with the
agency in a supporting role. Trimble Police Chief Jimmy Ring was also
assisting at the scene.

Witnesses interviewed by the TBI told of the minutes leading up to the
incident.

Darrell Gill, a former Trimble officer, said he and Cook were sitting
at the BP station in the town until shortly before 6:20 p.m., when
Cook left.

"We were just talking, teasing each other," said Gill. "He was in a
good mood - he was going on about how he was going to get to have his
daughter for Christmas."

"It would have been the first time since Father's Day that he could
see her," said Cook's sister, Julia Allmon of Hickman, Ky., who
arrived at the scene two hours after the shooting.

Allmon said Cook had been going through a divorce from his wife that
started in May. A dispute over custody of the couple's only child was
soon to be settled, she said.

"He was so happy about getting to see her," said Allmon.

Gill said Cook telephoned the BP station minutes before he was killed.

"He was saying that he had to get a hold of the mayor, that something
was bad wrong. That's the last I heard of him."

Cook's body was removed from the car shortly after 11 p.m. and was
taken to the office of the Shelby County Medical Examiner for an
autopsy.

Cook lived on Poplar Street in Trimble and worked at Dyer Gin Co. in
Gibson County.

Horner has been a Trimble officer for three years. In the November
election he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Dyersburg mayor.
