New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!
Making our city the best place to raise a family means taking care of our fellow New Yorkers at all stages of life, including ensuring little New Yorkers and their families have support from day one and improving resources to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy. This past week, we acted to: |
- Ensure no child is ever born in a shelter – We launched two programs that will make sure working-class mothers and mothers-to-be have the support they need across the five boroughs. The CRIB program, “Creating Real Impact at Birth,” puts pregnant New Yorkers applying for shelter on the path toward permanent housing and stability, while “NYC Baby Boxes” provides free boxes filled with essentials to new families at the four public hospitals with the highest number of births each year.
- Support survivors of domestic violence – Alongside the brave men and women of the NYPD, we're rolling out a new Domestic Violence Unit that will strengthen support for survivors and ensure investigators are better trained to investigate domestic violence incidents. This is the largest dedicated unit of its kind in the nation, and it will be powered by approximately 400 officers responding to domestic violence cases and building stronger relationships with survivors.
- Help New Yorkers make healthier decisions – The New York City Health Department is leading the nation in requiring chain restaurants to clearly indicate menu items that contain 50 grams or more of added sugars. Starting this month, this new rule will apply to nearly 4,000 eateries citywide, raising awareness about sugar consumption and supporting healthier choices for New Yorkers.

↳ Three things to know this week:
- We’re making 100+ streets car-free this month with the return of our popular Trick-or-Streets! Starting tomorrow, this celebration of fall and the spooky season will transform streets across the five boroughs into pedestrian-only zones with free performances, parades, workshops, crafts, photo ops, and more. Plus, kids can safely trick-or-treat! Find an event near you.
- We recently expanded our Fatherhood Initiative, which gives NYC dads parenting education and financial support. Now, with 17 more affiliated programs, we’re doubling the total number of fathers served from 1,500 to 3,000. Learn more here or call 1-800-246-4646 to find a program for you.
- NYC offers free one-on-one financial counseling! Head to one of our NYC Financial Empowerment Centers for personalized services such as budget coaching, assistance opening a bank account, loan repayment strategies, and more. Make an appointment online here.
