🗺️ New Yorkers, we’re soon mapping it all out! I’ll explain why an underground map of our city matters, our next steps to roll out “After-School for All,” a major investment in public open space, and so much more. Here’s what you should know this week in the Big Apple.

Good evening New Yorkers,

If you want to know what our administration has stood for since day one, look at what we've invested in over the last four years: public safety, a more affordable city, and a higher quality of life for all. As we finish our term strong, our final November Financial Plan reiterates those values and makes important investments in our city. From 5,000 additional uniformed police officers to support for housing vouchers, we are running through the tape to deliver for the working-class families of the five boroughs.

Here’s how we delivered for you and your family this past week:

  • Making our city safer above AND below ground – For the first time ever, we're mapping our city's underground network of pipes, cables, and lines, so city agencies and utility companies have a 3D understanding of what's below our feet. This will not only help with construction and improvement projects across the five boroughs, but also allow us to better respond to emergencies
  • Expanding after-school access – We announced the next phase of “After-School for All,” adding 10,000 NEW spots for the fall of 2026  in the communities that need them most. The 75 public schools and 11 community centers selected for this expansion were chosen strategically based on local economic needs and existing gaps in after-school services. It’s all part of our work to make this city more affordable for working-class families and put our kids on the path to a bright future with universal after-school programming.
  • Investing in outdoor recreation space – As our city managed an unprecedented migrant crisis, the Randall’s Island Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center was key to sheltering over 25,000 migrants. Now, as we’ve helped them take the next steps towards self-sufficiency and fulfilling their American Dreams, we’re working with NYC Parks and the Randall’s Island Park Alliance to bring the park back to life through an investment in new soccer fields for children and families to play and make lasting memories.

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. Our NYC Department of Transportation collected a record-breaking 5.9 MILLION pounds of compost in ONE WEEK! Last week saw the highest level of separated compostable material collected curbside in our city's history. With your help, we can break the record again in the coming weeks. After all, as of April 1, 2025, composting is mandatory for all NYC residents!
  2. You can get a free smoke alarm installed in your home, thanks to a partnership between the FDNY and the American Red Cross. This program has already installed 300,000+ smoke detectors since its launch 10 years ago and has saved countless lives. Having a working smoke alarm cuts your risk of dying in a home fire by about 60%, so request a free alarm installation if you need one.
  3. Looking to move or curious about affordable housing in NYC? The NYC Housing Connect lottery currently has 41 rental lotteries open across the five boroughs. Several buildings have rents below $1,000. Units are newly renovated, and many have amenities such as doormen, air conditioning, gyms, accessible rooftops, laundry, and more. FREE events this weekend:

Before you go, did you know…

...you can get a free behind-the-scenes look at this year’s iconic Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons as they get inflated on Thanksgiving Eve? For 31 years, New Yorkers have been able to see the breathtakingly big balloons blow up ahead of the official festivities. Next Wednesday, November 26, go see the balloons come to life on Manhattan’s Upper West Side right by the Museum of Natural History from 1 PM to 6PM! Just enter the viewing route at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue.

And, if you’re around on Thanksgiving next Thursday and want to see something spectacular happening right in our backyard, don’t miss Macy’s biggest parade to date! Here’s what to know about free public viewing this year for the 99-year-old parade.

New York, have a wonderful rest of your week and don’t let anything get in the way of your grind. When we stay focused without distractions, we can do anything — especially in the greatest city in the world.

Eric
