🚮💥 New Yorkers, our Empire Bins continue to strike back and now, with the Return of the Trash Revolution, we have a new hope on vanquishing rats in our city. Find out the next frontier of our fight and all the other updates to know this week in NYC.

New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!

We just got our progress report in, and our city continues to deliver for YOU. Our annual Mayor’s Management Report looks at thousands of policies and programs to assess effectiveness and progress. Some highlights include major crime declines across key categories, rat infestations at a five-year low, 28,000 affordable homes created or preserved, and so much more. Want to learn more? Check out this simple break-down video, or browse through the full report at your own pace.

To continue this promising trajectory of delivering a safer and more affordable city for New Yorkers like you, this past week, we acted to:

  • Take the next step in our “War on Rats” – Our revolutionary Empire Bins are striking back against rodents in Brooklyn, bringing new trash containers to schools in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill this fall and to all high-density apartment buildings next year.
  • Get illegal firearms off our streets – We announced that we’ve taken over 4,000 illegal guns off our streets since the beginning of this year alone — bringing our administration’s total guns seized to over 23,700 since coming into office in 2022. This success has played a key role in driving down shooting incidents and shooting victims to down to ALL-TIME LOWS in city history.
  • Call to ban horse carriages – We’re moving to end the use of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park by urging the City Council to finally pass Ryder’s Law and replace carriages with modern alternatives. Following a series of tragic horse collapses and runaway incidents in the past year, as a first step, we signed an executive order to tighten oversight, create a process for voluntary license returns, and create new jobs for drivers while preparing city agencies for a ban.

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. It's Hispanic Heritage Month! Through October 15, we're celebrating the vibrant cultures, histories, and contributions of our city’s diverse Hispanic and Latino communities. To celebrate, check out these free events through the New York Public Library, head to the Hispanic Day Parade in Queens, or explore these events curated by NYC Tourism for its month-long “Viva NYC” celebration.
  2. Our Department of Transportation is giving away FREE bicycle helmets and fittings! We've already distributed over 350,000 free helmets to New Yorkers across the five boroughs, but we’re not stopping there. Visit a giveaway near you this month to get yours.
  3. You may be entitled to a rebate for your NYC Bin! If you’re an owner of a one-family or two-family home who receives the Basic or Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR or E-STAR) credit or exemption, be on the lookout for a $59.30 check in the mail to cover the costs of your NYC Bin. Our Department of Finance will send them automatically in the weeks to come. Learn more about eligibility here

FREE events this weekend:

Before you go, did you know…

...there's a free country-style hoedown coming to the heart of Manhattan next Thursday, September 25 at 6 PM? Bryant Park’s “Square Dance” event returns for an evening of outdoor fun! You can learn how to lasso, ride a mechanical bull, line dance, and more alongside your neighbors dressed in their best Western attire. This is where “yeehaw” meets “yerrr,” and you won’t want to miss it.
