🌞 New Yorkers, here’s an overview of everything to know this week in NYC ahead of our four-day weekend! We cover our major announcements of the week, back-to-school planning, beaches, and more.

New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!

When we say we’re making this a safer and more affordable city, we mean it. This past week, we put justice-involved New Yorkers on paths to brighter futures, improved Bronx traffic safety, and helped our older neighbors build confidence using new technology. We acted to:

  • Put New Yorkers on the path to brighter futures – After a successful pilot program, we're expanding our Commercial Driver’s License training program for justice-involved New Yorkers to connect more New Yorkers with good-paying jobs in an industry facing significant labor shortages. This multi-million-dollar investment will help hundreds of additional New Yorkers secure high-paying trucking jobs, keep people out of the justice system, and boost our city’s workforce.
  • Make Bronx streets safer for all – Alongside multiple city agencies, we launched the next phase of infrastructure improvements that will upgrade traffic safety features, add bike lanes, plant trees along road medians, improve street lighting and more along Grand Concourse.
  • Improve older New Yorkers’ digital literacy – Our NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, NYC Aging, and NY Public Library partnered to expand our “Neighborhood Tech Help” pilot program to the Bronx and Upper Manhattan. The service provides in-person assistance to older New Yorkers in affordable housing and older adult centers so they can use the internet, smartphones, and computers with confidence. ↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. The first day for NYC Public Schools is next week on September 4. Get your little New Yorkers ready by checking out the official back-to-school hub, taking a peek at the delicious lunch menu for the week, and reviewing the new cell phone and electronics policy for this school year!
  2. Last chance for beaches and pools! You have through September 7 to soak up the sun and take a dip. Find a beach or free outdoor pool near you and make the most of the final days of summer.
  3. NYC can help you find a job! Our Workforce1 Career Center offers free 1-on-1 career advice, interview prep, and access to trainings for New Yorkers. Check our Jobs NYC site for job openings, recruitment events, and even more free career resources.

Before you go, did you know…

...the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City back in 1882? On the first Monday of September that year, thousands of working-class New Yorkers marched for workers’ rights in Union Square and sparked a nationwide movement.

📢 📢 📢

Enjoy your long weekend, New York! Whether you're spending Monday at the beach, having a relaxing day with loved ones, or catching up on your to-do list, you can thank America’s labor unions and NYC’s workers for getting us this day off all those years ago.
