🫧🧼 New Yorkers, we’re feeling squeaky clean across the five boroughs, and that’s because we are! We hit major milestones in getting NYC cleaner than ever and continued to deliver a safer, more affordable city for you. Here’s what to know.

New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!

This week, we continued to make NYC cleaner, safer, more affordable, and the best place to raise a family by announcing a new NYPD class that will have almost 1,100 new NYPD recruits, unveiling major wins on our “War on Rats,” and announcing an unforgettable opportunity to see Broadway performances for free as part of our city’s 400th anniversary celebration. This week, we acted to:

  • Swear in our largest NYPD class since 2016 – We just brought in our largest NYPD officer class in almost 10 years, speaking to our administration’s investments in public safety year after year. They’ll be part of nearly 10,000 brave men and women who stepped up to protect and serve in the NYPD under our administration and will help us continue to drive down crime to record lows, improve quality of life for all New Yorkers, and end the culture of “anything goes” on our streets.
  • Make NYC cleaner and win the war on rats – We hit three milestones in our mission to make NYC cleaner than ever: 1) Thanks to the Department of Sanitation’s Highway Unit that our administration established in 2023, we’ve taken 15 million pounds of trash off our highways, 2) New Yorkers purchased over 800,000 NYC Bins to keep trash bags off sidewalks and out of the prickly paws of creepy critters, and 3) Rat sightings have declined for eight straight months! Our work is working — buh-bye, rats!
  • Celebrate 400 years of NYC with free programming – To commemorate our city’s 400th anniversary and spotlight Broadway’s vital role in the city’s history for over 100 years, we’re hosting a free Broadway concert in Times Square featuring performances by 23 spectacular shows. Our “Founded By Broadway” show will happen on September 7 at 11 AM and showcase productions like Wicked, Mamma Mia!, The Lion King, and more. View the full lineup here!

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. Free Summer Meals are available for all kids 18 years and younger through August 29! Enjoy free breakfasts and lunches at convenient locations around the five boroughs, such as schools, pools, and libraries. No paperwork required — just show up!
  2. This Saturday, August 23, take advantage of the final car-free Summer Streets of the season in the Bronx and Brooklyn along the Grand Concourse or Eastern Parkway! From 7 AM to 3PM, you can walk, run, bike, play, and sample free food and drinks down open roads. For FREE Citi Bike rides all day, use code “LYFTSUMMER25” in the Day Pass section of the app.
  3. Get real-time city weather and emergency alerts texted directly to your phone when you sign up for Notify NYC. Just text “NOTIFYNYC” to 692-692 to subscribe! And if you reply with your zip code, you’ll also receive local updates for your neighborhood.
