Hi David. Thanks very much for your email.
So the following is just my $0.02; I'm not "speaking for the group".
(We don't actually have any official leaders yet - though I suppose
Hank, and to a lesser degree myself, are the closest things to it since
we've been the ones beating the drum on this the loudest and longest.)
So anyone who's of a different opinion, please feel free to chime in!
Thanks much for offering your help; it's very much appreciated! As it's
definitely going to be a long, tough task to try to boost the tech
community here, we definitely can use a lot of help. So if you
personally and/or Sun as a company have an interest in making this
happen, and would like to contribute to the effort, that'd be great and
most welcome!
As far as the Startup Essential Program specifically, though, although I
think it could be a great help to specific startups in the community,
I'm not sure I see how it could directly help us achieve the immediate
goals we have in mind for this effort.
Seems to me that given our goal of growing the core tech community here,
what we're trying to focus on right now is to pull together a coalition
of people from the various concerned areas of the community, put
together a list of the community's concerns and issues, and then develop
an action plan on how we can try to solve them.
There's plenty of room for concerned individuals to help with that. And
I imagine there'll also probably be significant ways that interested
corporations can help here as well. (For example: I'm sure the effort
will start to require physical space and/or capital resources before long.)
But again, I guess I don't see how the Startup Essential Program
specifically could help here. But if you think I've misunderstood the
program's intent, though, please feel free to clarify.
If I'm correct about your startup program, though, I was wondering: do
you think that there's anything else that you personally or Sun as a
company might be willing and able to contribute to help us make the
effort a success?
For example: any chance that Sun might be able to provide some meeting
space for this from time to time?
Also, as a successful Valley hardware/software/OS company, Sun has been
in the thick of the growth of the Valley tech scene. So perhaps there's
some expertise Sun could offer here as well - in the form people who've
lived through the growth of the Valley tech scene, and could provide
advice on how to help grow such a community here.
Thanks again for participating on the list. Would love to hear any
feedback or thoughts you've got on any of this.
