I have just blogged about a new concept which has been bouncing around in my head but just took form today. I have called it Geek NY.

The idea is that one of the things we really need to do to improve the state of tech in NY is to build a technologist community. The best new york community I have seen is the NY Tech Meetup. It is in an person monthly get together, and is anchored around giving people information and perhaps entertaining them a bit. This is backed up by a vibrant mailing list.

It seems to me that any goals we may have regarding improving the state of tech in NY involves bringing people together. So this will start off as an experiment to figure out the right format, but whatever the format, the real goal here is bringing some cohesion to a large but very disconnected technologist community in NY.

Great idea. Last night we had an entrepreneurs meeting, where I sent
notices on some mailing lists, got a large room from a law firm and 60
people showed up and it was great.

I recommend setting a meeting date, finding a place to meet (not a bar
- I can help with this) and announcing it as for tech people only. It
should be free. In the first meeting, we can have introductions and
discuss if we should have presentations in the consequent meetings or
just Q&A sessions or just networking etc.

cheers,
Murat

Murat,

Thanks for the support. I definitely agree the meeting should not be in a bar! I have one specific thought about the meeting space which I cant yet talk about publicly, but which would be very cool, so I dont want to nail that down quite yet.

I do feel though that a big part of the success of these events is having something specific to look forward to as part of the mix. I think that networking is critical as well, and so in my mind it is a mix. But a "headliner" subject or person will, I think, be very helpful in drawing people out that might otherwise not come.
