TELL PRESIDENT HUMALA AND NEWMONT MINING
CORPORATION TO STOP PLUNDERING CAJAMARCA!!!
This Conga gold mine
project is being carried out by the US-based Newmont Mining Corporation and its
Peruvian partners with the sanction of Peru’s President Ollanta Humala.
In an effort to extract gold from the Conga district in Cajamarca Peru - these corporate
plunderers are threatening the fragile ecosystem of the region and its already
limited water supply. The project includes destroying four mountain lakes in
the region which will have dangerous results for the local environment and
population! Although the Newmont Mining Corporation has promised to replace the
lakes with man-made reservoirs, such artificial creations cannot replicate the
natural ecological processes that take place in the original lakes. Likewise,
the sustainability of the reservoirs in this earthquake-prone region is highly
questionable.
Local communities and
activists opposed to the mining project are currently being harassed. President
Humala’s policies have included the arrests of activists, suspension of civil
liberties and the killing of protesters. Particularly tragic were the deaths of
five people and the injuring of dozens more when police opened fire on
protesters in the towns of Celendin and Bambamarca on July 3, 2012. Two days
later, Father Marco Arana, a leading activist opposed to the project, was roughed
up and dragged by police from a demonstration in a choke hold. Show your support
for Father Marcos as well as Gregorio Santos, Cajamarca’s regional President
and forty-one other activists charged with “obstruction” for protesting the
Conga gold mine.
Come out and demonstrate on Wednesday July
18th
Meet in front of Peruvian Consulate at 5pm
