Are games scheduled for today?  If so, I am down to play whatever.  Just let me know if there is a plan or not.

Not AFAIK. I’m busy, Josh is moving.

People also still need to schedule the finals.

Only thing on the schedule is good intentions.

@ Josh good luck with the hell that is moving... especially in these temperatures

@Josh, @Chris, and @ James As to finals : I think we can consider it optional, but -- If Next Tuesday suits, I am up for it, but also ok with moving on to general gaming.  So, I abstain -- what do you guys want to do next Tuesday -- a Brawl for the 2015 Fist capper, or move onwards?

If the latter - I am happy to bring any one of the following games:
TTR (basic)
Red Dragon Inn (I have the first 3 expansions
Alhambra

If you guys vote to move onward, please indicate what game you would prefer, and include what you would be willing to bring, instead.

I'm with you Bruce.  If others wish to meet next Tues for new season of Fist or something else then I would not mind skipping the finals and moving on.  But if no one else but just the 4 of us can make it, then I guess we can play the finals.  It does not matter to me either way.

All right then.
At best a tie for a finals, so I suspect we are gaming, generally.

Who volunteers to bring what?
This, above all else... bringing games, and having a consensus that THAT is what people want to play, is what will determine whether this idea works or dies on the vine.

I am in a good position to bring games as I live and work close to the cafe.  However I would need to know what games people want to play.  I have a small but reasonable selection of games, but not nearly as extensive as some here.  I could also bring an assortment and what to play from those available could be determined on site.

Great to know Jan... but -- what do people feel like playing might best be handled by posts here...

Let us know which games you wouldn;t might bringing and playing, then let's pipe in ans to what sounds good.

By the time we get to Monday, we should know who is bringing what, and who would (likely) be coming to play

As a reminder, I have offered (but am happy to be replaced) to bring for the first session
Red Dragon Inn
TTR (basic)
Alhambra

I have manyothers, but I thought this was s decent start... But like some and unlike some , my commmute is very long, so I am really happy to show up and polay a game someone else has brought (also means I get to play something I dont own).

Works for me. I can bring something, though currently most of my games
are in boxes. Russian Railroads, maybe? Haven't played that for a
while, and it's fab. Also, should be getting Scoville in a few weeks,
but not by next week, I suspect.

I've left RR and Uchronia unboxed, so those are likely what I'll bring.

Which reminds me; as we open a new juncture for the group and the tiny
community we've built, it's probably time to change our name and internet presence.

What do people want to go with? "NYC Dojo" is generally what we've used to
refer to the group, but I have a few issues with that:

1. It's a bit appropriative.
2. Dojo is japanese. If we're calling back to Shadowfist, it's better to use a
name that looks at Chinese conventions, not Japanese.
3. It's likely that most variants are taken, as there are a lot of Karate or
Judo studios in NYC.

Kwoon is closest in Cantonese, (as club, used as "Wu Kwoon for a martial arts
association/school), but it doesn't have the same recognition value. "No
Shadow Gaming" might be a reasonable callback [I'll admit that "Shadowfist" has
always annoyed me as a name, since near as I can tell, it was inspired by the
"no shadow" style of movie moves, so called because they were so fast; "no
shadow kick", etc], or Windwater Gaming Club for a direct translation of Feng
Shui. Or just the "Way of Gaming" for a more Taoist take on things.

Thoughts?

If we're going to start inviting people into the group who aren't primarily
shadowfist-associated, it's probably best to do a rename sooner rather than later.

I would rather not have an overtly Chinese name, despite a fair portion of our membership being of Chinese extraction) so "No Shadow" isn't bad.

But it raises odd question, perhaps.  Harkening back to Fist is cool, but I would prefer something with more covert flavor... so I thought of SF Gaming Group -- but quickly realized that sounds like Science Fiction...
But FS Gaming Grup fits nicely (Feng Shui)... If people ask we have an answer, but no one is likely to stay away becuase it sounds like the wrong place for them.

Quite.

I think the FS Gaming Group has similar problems to No Shadow -- it doesn't
have a conventional meaning, so it demands the question of what the title
means. The reason my first thought, despite my objections, was "NY Gaming
Dojo" is that it's clear that it presents a club for playing games and maybe
learning some new ones, without needing a referent.

Hmm. What about "Harmony Gaming Association?" It links back to Feng Shui in
an indirect but definate way, and presents the idea of a gaming society (I
favor "association" mostly because it is often used to translate Chinese
martial arts and secret societies, probably because of that ubiquitous "Kwann")
without needing background to get the idea of a gaming group that likes to have
fun without too much rancor.

Anyone else have opinions on the subject?

Also, we're moved (to a nicer apartment in the same part of Queens, more

I think Cafe 28. It's not super-crowded in our time slot, and it's a great location in terms of midpoint and travel.

Jan: I think you'll definately not be an odd number, particularly if I'm not the only person bringing games. I've got Uchronia (puerto rico role-taking, 2-5 players) and Russian Railroads (worker placement, 2-4 players) with me.

Hey.

I have a work conflict, so I can't make it tonight.

But, when are we scheduled to play Shadowfist?  Is there going to be a calendar listing what games will happen on which night?

There isn’t. Freeform gaming probably works best, rather than trying to schedule specific games.

People can (and should) bring Fist, and I’m sure it’ll get played sometimes, but aside from the occasional draft, I don’t think we’ll be explicitly scheduling it.

But don’t let that stop you from showing up. The games being brought will take a lot less effort to learn than Fist did, and you’ll probably like at least some of them.

Nothing wrong with "scheduling" a final brawl now and then, I would think.  Personally I would rather not even bring Fist if I know there are other games on the docket.... and if we are only playing Fist a few times a year, then I might even build a new deck.

For now, every other Tuesday -- with people offering ahead of time or bring a game or two, and some feedback on what sounds good.

My son just bought Xenoshift Onslaught  Looks like it might be fun .

Co-operative game that combines deck building / draft and a sort of tower defense motif.  2-4 players draft cards to build decks to deploy troops, gizmos and zaps that help them protect the base against 3 waves (9 rounds) of space bugs that want to overrun it.  The same troop card piles are available each time, but game specific gizmos/equipment/zap piles of cards are chosen randomly, as in Dominion.  If a special pile runs out, a new pile is randomly chosen.  The players win if the base isn't dead at the end.

I could bring that one next time.

AFAIK, still Cafe 28. Relocation is still up for discussion, but we didn’t reach any consensus. (And there’s a lot to be said for remaining in a public space, both because it means we’re not reliant on any one person’t availability, and because it allows us to recruit.)

Numbers are a much smaller problem than before. Unless we only have two people showing, there shouldn’t be any bad numbers, unless we have five, and the only games brought cap at four and aren’t good for two. This can be avoided by bringing more games.
