We won't be having another big salon until August, but in the meantime
I'd like to build off of some conversations I had at the first salon and
an idea I've been pondering for a while.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Book Trailers - they're
like movie trailers except for books :) Simple enough. But because books
don't already have visual or audio elements to them, the footage for the
trailer is created from scratch. You can see some examples here:
www.book-trailers.net or just search YouTube for Book Trailer and you're
bound to find a ton.

I like the idea of book trailers but most of the ones I've seen aren't
very good. This is due to constraints - money, skill with video editing
software, etc. If the author or the publishing company is willing to
spend a chunk of change they'll get something decent. Authors who can't
often end up with the bad trailers.

Also, in the trailers I've seen, there is a distinct lack of real flair.
Movie trailers are an art and I think book trailers should be, too.

It would serve everyone better if book trailers were conceived as pieces
of art in themselves. There are so many talented video and film artists
out there, many of them doing amazing (and interstitial) work. If we
could get these artists together with authors and filmmakers and even
musicians this could result in some really interesting video projects
that also happen to serve as a promotional vehicle for a book. Art from
necessity.

So, for this salon, I would like to gather together people interested in
exploring this idea and making it happen. I know some authors who have
books coming out in the next few months and they'd make great initial
guinea pigs for such an experiment. If you're a filmmaker, video artist,
graphic artist, musician or have any skills that could contribute to the
project, please come to this salon!
