Curbside Composting is going citywide! ALL Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx residents will have FREE weekly composting service starting this October—no sign-up needed!

 

Service begins the week of October 6, and compost will be collected on the same day as recycling.

Help your residents and constituents find their recycling day at on.nyc.gov/CollectionDay.

 

 

Get a FREE Compost Bin!

Order a free compost bin for your building. Click on your borough to order the bin!

 

 

How to Compost:

ALL Food Scraps and Food-Soiled Paper

  • Use any labeled bin (55 gallons or less) with a secure lid or your DSNY brown bin. Order a free Composting Bin Decal.
  • Line your bin with any bag to keep it clean.
  • Tie the bag closed and securely close the bin lid before setting the bin out at the curb for collection.
  • Write your address on your bin.

 

ALL Leaf and Yard Waste

  • Any labeled bin (55 gallons or less) with a secure lid or DSNY brown bin.
  • Clear plastic bag or paper leaf bag.
  • Bundle twigs and branches with twine and place on curb next to bins or bags.

 

 

Composting Will be Mandatory

Leaf and yard waste separation:
There will be a 3-month warning period before residents are subject to fines.

Separation of food waste and food-soiled paper:

The warning period runs through Spring 2025 before residents are subject to fines.

 

 

About the New York City Department of Sanitation

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe and clean by collecting, recycling and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms and 705 salt spreaders. The Department clears litter, snow and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.
