Hi,

Can anyone update me on the latest regulation regarding collecting compost from businesses in NYC? I know a few years ago there was a pilot program managed by BIC. How did that go? Has anything changed with regulatory framework for community composters?

Thanks

Jason

Hey Jason,

This is a VERY large topic that has been ongoing, there's a lot of work going on with micro hauling as it relates to the City's Commercial Waste Zoning plan and developing legislation.

Short answer, the limited BIC pilot will be dissolving as the new regs are developed and implemented, and micro-scale collection rules are being developed as part of the larger CWZ plan. The CWZ legislation is being written right now and will likely be announced next month or in the next few months. Then there will be hearings, etc.

There's a LOT more detail, of course, and I suggest that you attend the upcoming Community Composting Forum (this weekend and next week!) if you want to learn more and meet the people doing this work.

If you're curious about commercial organics rules more generally, you can find those on DSNY's site but it seems like you're more interested in the community-scale collection and processing of commercial waste.

Thanks Meredith. Hi Jason. This just came up at a meeting just yesterday. Good to know about and contribute to the CWZ plan as it's rolled out. It will have an enormous impact on communities.

So many moving parts to commercial organics as well...and much of it hits a very hard wall at available local capacity.

If you think about it a busy small restaurant would prob overwhelm most community composting sites. Also unless the restaurant is a cafe or vegetarian, they probably won’t want to source separate proteins and fats.

There are ample use cases that could support a variety of community level organics diversion programs. The trick is defining them and building the organizations and infrastructure to support them.
