Hey community,

Does anyone have an updated map of community compost sites in NYC? I just realized all the maps I can find are outdated, but we have so many community gardens composting, in addition to community composting orgs... I'm looking at places where composting is happening, not necessarily drop-off sites.

Let me know!

I would love this information also to accumulate them on our interactive map I am creating with the Urban Food Policy Institute.

Here's Big Reuse's Community Compost Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/v3hQAvN7m2a8wpw38

and their page with this and other Maps:  https://bigreuse.org/pages/compost

The DSNY Map is NOT up to date--sites like ours at JH-SCRAPS in JH, Queens were taken OFF it without our consent/OK!?!?

Certainly someone from DSNY or their contracted groups can respond better but I'll try.

It was always my understanding that the FSDO map was based upon NYC compost project certification of community compost systems on-site, so that at least at one time, the FSDO map was not only a map of locations that one could drop off food scraps but also a map of community composting sites that had been visited and approved by NYC Compost project workers. Indeed I have worked with a community garden to build a community compost bin so that they could get on the list and the site I manage Morris Jumel Community Garden in Washington heights was visited by LESEC to re-certify our site this year - its not clear to me that it was related to the FSDO map participation though.

It would be nice if around this time every year when we are emerging from winter, someone got on this list with information on how to update participation in this list.

That said, we have a growing number of brown bins (people keep leaving them in front of the garden) available 24/7 on the sidewalk and over the winter we just pulled them to the curb on the designated day for DSNY to pick up - it certainly has made it easier on me! Residents of larger than 9 units buildings want to compost and the City currently hasn't given them a way to do it - so we are trying to pick up the slack in ways that are easiest on garden members. I really appreciate that this is the first year I am not hauling full brown bins to the back of our garden in freezing temperatures.

Hey Nando, Ellen, Ashley etc,

There’s a community garden dataset on opendata.nyc.gov Haven't checked it in some time.  Afaik, it’s Parks/Greenthumb surveyed data that should really be updated. Is the LES certification program captured in any NYC Parks data?

Also Chris Wong has developed a map app called NYC Public Space. I use it as I move about the city.

Cheers, Marc

Thanks all for your replies and leads! DSNY definitely wouldn't be able to provide a list of community composting sites and/or drop-offs at this point, but I would love to find a way to crowdsource. I'll look at the links sent more in detail this weekend and follow up.

I've spoken to some of the group members here about this at the last crazy for composting event at NYBG, but I work for the NYCPS Office of Energy & Sustainability and my request was prompted by the idea of connecting schools to places where kids can actually see and participate in the composting process and better understand why it's crucial to sort waste. It's also a good opportunity to get them out in green spaces!
