yesterday we discussed with the Public Health
Concern Trust (PHECT), who partner with AMNF and Kathmandu Model
Hospital, about doing GYN camps in Achham. They have just received a
grant from UNFPA to do several camps in Achham to screen for third
degree uterine prolapse and provide curative hysterectomies at Doti
Hospital. They have funds sufficient only for 25 surgeries, which is
quite inefficient given that they are sending 22 staff members to the
region and the largest cost by far is payment and transportation of
these personnel (an inefficiency resulting from the UNFPA
bureaucracy). They can perform surgeries on women that we screen at
our clinic; we just have to cover the transportation, hospitalization,
and materials costs. This comes to approximately $200 per surgery.
They are willing to do as many as 75 additional surgeries if we can
cover the costs. Over the next three months, Dr. Bishnu together with
our staff will be screening for uterine prolapse at the clinic. Given
that the prevalence among multiparous women in Achham may be over 25%,
we anticipate having a huge demand for this truly life-altering
surgery. Please start raising money among family, friends, and
colleagues. Although the $200 figure is likely an overestimate (the
doctors we spoke with were public health planners, not surgeons; I
have requested their protocols and materials sheets), you can honestly
state that number to your contacts since it will be close and any
excess money can be used for additional patients or for improved
post-operative care.
