1As of March 31, 2024; aviation assets under management includes all assets managed or serviced by Carlyle Aviation (which includes, in addition to invested capital, indebtedness and uncalled capital commitments as well as the value of assets for which Carlyle Aviation provides operational and/or other non-investment advisory services).
In partnership with Revv Aviation and the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID), Coe College is opening a flight school and aviation management program. Those interested in becoming a professional pilot can complete their certification while enrolled as students within Coe's new aviation management concentration. This new concentration and program will be offered pending approval by the Higher Learning Commission.
The need for pilots and support personnel across the aviation industry has reached a critical level. There is estimated to be a 17,000 pilot gap as many are leaving the position due to age-mandated retirement, and the increase in demand is driving starting salaries near $90,000 or more. Coe will help train the next generation of pilots. Students who choose Coe for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certification will also graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in business administration with a concentration in aviation management, which is preferred by major carriers and creates higher earning and career promotion potential.
Coe has engaged with Revv Aviation to run the flight school. Revv Aviation has many years of experience as a flight training partner, producing over 3,000 flight school graduates. Through this partnership, Coe will pursue Part 141 certification with the FAA, which is a more structured and rigorous training program designed for professional pilots. Once certified, most students will earn their certification more quickly under Part 141, potentially a significant cost savings. Students will also have the opportunity to earn while they learn by becoming certified flight instructors and gaining employment while finishing their flight hours.
Students in the aviation program will have exclusive use of a hangar and office space. Coe students will have the ability to network with the experienced aviation professionals and pilots based out of the airport.
Ongoing modernization at the airport will also enhance student experience and opportunities. Now in its fourth and final phase, CID is adding 32,000 square feet and four additional jet bridges to accommodate the five airlines that provide service to 19 nonstop destinations.
A Coe donor with unparalleled excitement and support for the program is investing $200,000 to jumpstart the initiative. In addition, the college is pursuing federal funding in partnership with the airport.
Coe plans to offer the flight school and aviation management program beginning Fall 2025. However, college and airport officials recognize the demand for professionals in the aviation industry is significant. The program is prepared to open this fall (2024) if the market demands are such that a sizable cohort wishes to enroll immediately.
The Aviation Management Bachelor of Science degree program is designed to build upon technical training in aviation maintenance, flight, avionics technology, air traffic control, aircraft operations support and other aviation-related technical fields. This is a career-oriented degree program that meets the educational needs of individuals who have aviation-related work experience and/or technical training from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Full-time and part-time faculty are employed to teach for the Aviation Management program. The majority of the faculty are aviation professionals who have an extensive teaching and academic backgrounds, and/or are industry experts in their teaching areas. This mix of faculty, with academic and industry-related experience, is unique to the College of Applied Sciences and Arts off-campus programs and ensures the delivery of quality academics to all students.
Graduates of SIU Carbondale's Aviation Management program include National Transportation Safety Board investigators, airport directors, managers, consultants, safety inspectors and aircraft product support personnel. Graduates also work in military, airline, corporate aviation, general aviation and air traffic control fields.
Approved career electives are defined as formal coursework or its equivalent that is technical, managerial or supervisory in nature, and that is related to the aviation management major. Most students fulfill the requirements through previous education related to the major, previous occupational education credit related to the major, and/or previous work experience credit related to the major. This includes military technical training, MOS/NER/AFSC credit and experience.
University Core Curriculum (UCC) classes may be taken with SIU Carbondale community college partners, including Southwestern Illinois College, and Mt. San Antonio College. Some UCC courses may be taken online.
Students entering the Aviation Management program with an applied science associate degree that includes technical coursework related to aviation management or equivalent certification may be eligible for the capstone option. Detailed requirements for this option are in the university's undergraduate catalog. Students who qualify and are admitted to capstone will have their UCC requirements reduced to a minimum 30 semester hours.
The College of Applied Sciences and Arts is a member of the Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC). In keeping with membership in SOC, transfer credit is accepted in all areas to include the major. However, each student must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework to meet residency requirements. Each student must have a minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all work taken.
Pending approval from the Higher Learning Commission, the four-year program will earn students their Federal Aviation Administration pilot certification alongside a business administration degree with a concentration in aviation management, according to a news release. Students can also pursue the aviation management concentration without joining flight school.
Revv Aviation will run the flight school, the news release stated, having produced more than 3,000 flight school graduates in other programs. Coe College will also seek Part 141 certification with the FAA, which includes a training program for professional pilots that could help students get their certification more quickly and find a job in the industry while still logging flight hours, according to the release.
The airport is in the final phase of its modernization project, and is currently adding 32,000 square-feet and four more jet bridges, giving students a better and more cutting-edge experience, according to the release.
