These days, most periodicals are available in electronic format through subscription-based databases. Since electronic formats offer the greatest amount of access, the MDC Libraries purchase periodical titles as part of a database whenever possible. However, print subscriptions for your discipline can be purchased if needed.

In addition, digitized versions of the following art and design-related titles are available through Flipster, a database containing popular magazines that can be downloaded to a computer or mobile device:

In 1912 the ambitious publisher Lucien Vogel decided to launch an exclusive magazine. Well-acquainted with the fashion world, he forged ties with several of most renowned fashion houses of Paris and gathered the crme de la crme of French illustrators for his project. They recorded the latest creations of designers such as Doeuillet, Doucet, Worth, Poiret and Redfern, and, later on, couture by Chruit, Beer, Paquin and Lanvin. These designs were issued as separate plates. The Gazette was aimed at a small, extremely wealthy readership: in 1912-1913, a subscription for twelve issues cost an equivalent of around 400 euros today.

After getting well-versed with our concepts of text and image, we moved onto the illustration of the fashion croqui. We started off by outlining the 8-head mechanical croqui and then fleshing out the same. We had to repeat the same thing for homework as well.

Our next exercise was an extension of the previous one. We had to pick out 6 female and 6 male postures from a magazine, and illustrate these, first as mechanical croquis on a tracing sheet, then as an 8-head mechanical croquis, and finally as fleshed out ones.

The very first fashion magazine, the Cabinet des Modes (1785-1797), had occasionally also published pictures of new furniture or an interior to alternate with the fashions. The Gazette du Bon Ton picked up this tradition, enabling interior decorators and furniture designers to spread their ideas too. Some editions came with supplements consisting of an insert of four or five croquis (sketches) depicting modern interiors:
