Some help here please, a friend of mine bought a wdtv live media player which is now about over a year old. Thing is there is no Netflix app on it. Is it possible for me to add the Netflix app back on.

Depends which one it is. The original WDTV live smp had a chip that allowed netflix to play and still does. The newer iteration didn't have the chip so doesn't play netflix. I'm guessing you've got the newer one.

I tried installing both firmwares 1.05.04 and also 2.01.86, unzipped, put the three required files etc on a USB thumb drive, inserted the USB drive into the USB port of the WDTV, turned it on and it refused to update or even recognise it.

Apparently it says to add the three main files to the USB's main directory and in which I am sure I did, now there was other stuff also in the USB thumb drive but I dont think that would effect the firmware update, I did unzip the .bit, .fff and the .verr file, took all these three files out of the folder and placed them in the USB drive. But it would refuse to upgrade to the firmware.

There are a multitude of WDTV versions ... firmware from one version WILL NOT WORK on other versions ... that is the reason you were asked for the exact model / details of the device ...

WD TV Media Player (WD TV 2nd Gen)
Released in July 2014.[18] (NTSC model number WDBYMN0000NBK, PAL model number WDBPUF0000NBK). Identical hardware to the WDTV Live Streaming but missing Netflix. This last version of the WDTV was finally discontinued by Western digital in June 2016 and is no longer available for sale through the manufacturer.

If so, there is zero chance of Netflix running on it. I have multiple versions of WDTV over the years, and did everything possibly doable on each one to get the most out of them. There was lots of talk at the time talking about the release of that model, and the uproar that Netflix was removed and not able to be hacked back on. It made the older 2nd hand SMP model much more preferred as a result. They still sell the SMP on eBay and Gumtree if you want to hunt down an used one. Look for the one with "Streaming Media Player" in the name, and it has a mainly red packaging.

Hi Pedrov yes your correct that is the one she has and wow what a dissapointment it is. I'm very lucky that I've got one of the earlier ones which I've had for bit over three years now probably a bit less but mine definitely has got Netflix on it also I've got the Telstra Roku Box that also has Netflix.

Why not use the TTV that you already have. The Roku Media Player app is like a cut down version of Plex that will play from any media server on your home network as well as having a USB port to play from a HDD.
