Tuesday, August 24, 2021 - Cuomo grants clemency
On Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo
granted last-minute clemency to many prisoners across the state,
including to a number of convicted murderers, on his way out of
office.

One incarcerated person granted clemency was Albany native Dontie
Mitchell.

Mitchell was incarcerated at 17-years-old for an attempted robbery
and criminal possession of a weapon, and spent 24 years in prison.

With a desire to better himself and others around him, Mitchell
worked towards getting an associate degree. In 2008 he founded
Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty which is a self-improvement fraternity.

After his release, Mitchell said he would complete a fellowship with
the Reform Alliance and work to expand Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty.

CBS 6 contacted former Gov. Cuomo’s office to ask why Mitchell’s
sentence was commuted but never received a response.

Thursday, November 18, 2021 - Expanding Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty
Following two separate teenager-involved shootings in Albany in less
than a week, Mitchell spoke with CBS 6 about expanding his
organizations reach to Albany youth.

"So, I think that for me and for a lot of these kids nowadays why
you see such a proliferation of violence in Albany is because
there’s a lack of access to opportunities to nurture the potential
that they have," Mitchell said.

Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty members met weekly to discuss several
topics, from future career goals, sharing hobbies and how to end the
gun violence in Albany.

Members worked to achieve those goals through music, and have
created the Trust Money Love Entertainment record label and a
podcast called “Conscious Money Talks.”

Thursday, May 5, 2022 - Rapper Cardi B reposts Capital Region Youth
Group
On Thursday, May 5, 2022, Dontie Mitchell posted a video of kids
from Ujamaa Fraternal Dynasty dancing and singing along to Cardi B
music on to social media.

The video got the attention of Cardi B herself, leading her to
repost their video.

Not only was Mitchell growing his self-improvement fraternity
locally, but it now reached thousands online through a famous music
artist.

Tuesday, August 15, 2023 - Dontie Mitchell arrested on weapon
charges
Almost two years after being granted clemency, Dontie Mitchell was
arrested on weapon charges by Cohoes Police.

According to court filings online, charges include reckless
endangerment and possession of a loaded weapon.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty and was originally scheduled to appear
in court three days later, however, his appearance was adjourned.

Friday, August 18, 2023 - Dontie Mitchell charged in Cohoes murder
After originally being scheduled to appear in court Friday morning
on weapon charges, Mitchell now faced murder charges in connection
with a shooting in Cohoes the previous week.

An Albany County Grand Jury handed up an indictment charging
Mitchell, 43, of Albany, with One Count of Murder in the Second
Degree, One Count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second
Degree, and Two Counts of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree.

The indictment alleged that on or about August 11, 2023, while on
Main Street in the City of Cohoes, Mitchell, either alone or by
acting in concert with others, caused the death of Shieer Leggett.

Mitchell is also accused of possessing an illegal handgun and
recklessly engaging in conduct that showed a depraved indifference
to human life.

Mitchell remains in the Albany County Correctional Facility. His
next court date has not yet been scheduled.

Friday, August 18, 2023 - Community members react to Mitchell's
arrest
Advocates and activists are reacting to Dontie Mitchell's recent
arrest and indictment, saying they hope his message isn't lost in
the midst of his decision that now has him behind bars once again.

"He was someone who came out [of incarceration] with a positive
message, and I don't want that be drowned out or forgotten," Lukee
Forbes, a friend of Dontie Mitchell's and also a formerly
incarcerated individual, says.

Mitchell founded the Money Gang Youth Group, and before the arrest
was often seen at the State Capital raising funds to help facilitate
the future of the young men and teens he was mentoring.

Forbes says Mitchell was facing post-incarceration challenges, but
was still pouring his energy into the young individuals he was
working with. Forbes says he wishes Mitchell called him on Friday,
before heading to the altercation in Cohoes.

Wednesday, August 23, 2023 - Mitchell arraigned on charges in Albany
County Court
Dontie Mitchell was arraigned at the Albany County Court on Aug. 23.

He's accused of murder in the second degree, criminal possession of
a weapon and two counts of reckless endangerment.

Mitchell pleaded not guilty in court and was remanded to the Albany
County Correctional Facility.

He is due back in court in September.
