Closing Parks Is Not Pennywise But Plain Foolish!

Governor. David Paterson is proposing to close 91 parks and historic sites, along with another 40 sites that would experience "service reductions."

No, you didn't just misread that.

If the Legislature approves these cuts, 131 of our state's most treasured places would either shutter or suspend services (such as closing swimming pools, canceling July 4th events and ending sports programming).

Parks are not only a nicety, but an economic necessity:

  • State parks and historic sites generate $1.9 billion annually in economic activity
  • For every dollar the state spends on parks, it gets back five dollars
  • At a time when many families cannot afford to travel for vacations, state parks play an even more vital role in providing recreation and enjoyment of the outdoors.

These are tough economic times for New York. But the few dollars these cuts will save are dwarfed by the tremendous negative impact they will have on your quality of life.

Please join NYLCV in telling your legislators that enough is enough -- save our parks now!
