Hi

Firstly I'd like to say great product! I like the fact it uses very little resources.

Possible bug: I've setup e-mail alerts but it's not delivering any e-mails.

I'm using Debian 7 and have tried nxfilter 1.49 -> 1.50 with all alert fields populated.

From the console using startup.sh without the -d switch I see   "error Sending the email to the following server failed : mail.mydomain.com:25"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Tristan,

Just tested it again with my gmail account.
I received the email without any problem.
Can you show me your conifg values.
Don't need to reveal your password.

Do you not have anything between NxFilter and your email server?
You can check it using telnet.
  telnet email-server-ip 25

Hi Jinhee, Thanks for the quick response!

I have tried two mail servers one on my internal network and the other is external both respond ok

Telnet from nxfilter box:

Connected to smtp.ihug.co.nz.

220 cust.filter3.content.vf.net.nz ESMTP

Admin email: myaddress@ihug.co.nz

SMTP host: smtp.ihug.co.nz

SMTP port: 25

SMTP user: myusername

SMTP password: ***********

Email alert: clecked

DNS servers:192.231.203.132   192.231.203.3

Are there any dependences other than Java on Debian Linux?

Hi Tristan,

There's no dependency.
All the libraries included.
How about testing with gmail then?

In my case..
  Admin email : jinhee***@rocketmail.com
  SMTP host : smtp.gmail.com
  SMTP port 465
  SMTP SSL : checked
  SMTP user : gmuser

If your gmail works then I might need to test with your mail server as well.
So far I tested it with gmail and a James email server installed on my laptop.

Anyway your problem seems being placed between NxFilter and your email server.
If there's no connection problem it might be an authentication problem.
What kind of mail server are you using anyway?

Hi Jinhee,

I have had success with gmail thanks, but the two other external mail servers fail as in the original post.

smtp.gmail.com (port 465 SSL) passed
mail.ihug.co.nz (port 25, 465 SSL) failed
mail.internode.on.net (25, 465 SSL) failed

I have double checked my authentication using webmail / e-mail client.  This suggests there is no problem between my network and the e-mail servers?
I also have Kerio Connect 7 mail server on my LAN which fails also.  If it helps I can setup an account for you to test and send you the account privately?

Hi Tristan,

Yeah, I think that'd be the way to solving the problem.
If you can setup the email send it to support at nxfilter.org.

Hi Jinhee,I believed I have found the cause. SMTP mail is being blocked by the "block mailer worm" rule in the default policy.
I can fix this by adding my mail server domains to a whitelist or creating a user with this option unchecked.

Thanks for your help

You should have some log message for that. /nxfilter/log/nxfilter.log.

Got this after a while:

ERROR [09-16 06:05:02] - PostBox.send_email: org.apache.commons.mail.EmailException: Sending the email to the following server failed : 54.251.255.142:25

but verified, port 25 is open

Yeah, but it doesn't relay the mail from your NxFilter installation. And it's very hard to verify it as we don't have public SMTP to test with anymore.
You can't use Gmail for that anymore as far as I know. Lastly I tested it with my James email server. It's relatively easy to setup. What email server
do you use?

im using gmail account and aws instance as smtp server. We've using this smtp to all our monitoring device only, there's no user name and password.

You mean your admin email is Gmail? Can you get an access to your SMTP server then? Is it public? Or do you have any restriction like IP based ACL for your server?

i mean im using my gmail account.

i do have access to our SMTP server. its not public. we have restriction which ip can use smtp server. if you need  i can give it to you to test, just send me (PM) your ip address.
Here's the snapshot of my settings. ( i just replaced some details)

Is this correct?

Do you have any restriction for sender email address? Like it has to be an email address on your server or only from some domains? I can't send emails but I was using my own email so not sure about the reason.

Only restriction is ACL, which i included your ip. do you have smtp server i can test?
cheers

These days most SMTP servers don't relay emails from Internet so I am using James emails server for testing. I install it on my Windows system and then setup a local account as 'nxfilter' and then setup my 'Admin Email' as 'nxfilter@local'. So you are using the same email address for sending emails from other system?

I tested your server with my emclient which is a desktop mail client. And your server denied relay access from my email client.

No, im not sending email using my organisation assigned email address. Correct me if im wrong, the email address you put on admin email is the recipient right? so if i put my email address, i will receive alert?
