Read this,

There's Rob Asher's start/stop script for Linux. Or you can just use /etc/rc.local

What is the output of:

/sbin/initctl --version

If that gives you something like "initctl (upstart 0.6.5)" then make sure you copied the upstart script to /etc/init and not /etc/init.d/

initctl (upstart 1.12.1)  is what i get.
I had put it in /etc/init.d/ but regardless, it doesn't start nxfilter at boot time

OK....what happens if with issuing:

start nxd

You can also "stop nxd" and "status nxd".

I don't have an Ubuntu 14.04 VM handy but I'll spin one up.  Also, it probably should have been

sudo start nxd

since I doubt you're running as root on ubuntu.

Are you running a minimal, server, desktop or what version of 14.04?  I tested it on 14.04.01 Desktop that I found and it worked as expected on it.

Just installed Ubuntu server 14.04. rc.local works fine.

# By default this script does nothing.
/nxfilter/bin/startup.sh -d &
exit 0

You shouldn't have had to switch to CentOS.  I tested the upstart script on ubuntu 14.04 server, desktop, and JeOS and it worked for all my testing.  I do prefer CentOS personally though so glad you have everything working.
