Budd,

Can I use your Zoom feed for a group Test N Tune tonight? There was a lot of good info that was shared last night and I would like to put it to the test. I figured others may be interested in doing the same. The specific Items I would like to see work well for me are:
  • Pat Winlink
  • Direwolf APRS GUI
  • Backup and Restore (I still intermittently have problems with that)
  • Ways to move pictures from a smarter than me phone to RPI
  • Sending pictures with users on other digital modes (If timing is good that could happen on Steve digital net... Just an idea)
I can be flexible with time but was thinking any time after 18:00

I will standby for the Go, No Go...

73,
kf7vol

Good Morning to the group,

As casual and last minute as it may have been, last night's little round table did prove to be very helpful. I was able to familiarize myself and look into the following items:
  • After some good stumbles, we successfully sent a series of pat winlink emails and managed to get the rig control process working with a Kenwood. There were a couple of hiccups with setting up aliases but as usual, if I read all of Steve well-placed directions in the GUI the process comes together nicely
  • I was also able to set up the Direwold APRS application that can be used as needed. I feel that what we have today with that GUI is a vast improvement over where it started over 4 years ago. Nicely done Steve!
  • I have already been having some good luck with the RMS Node tool so that is nice and working well
  • We didn't talk about transferring pictures to a RPI from a phone, still need to look into that
  • Never did test sending pictures through other modes either. We can return to that another day
The one item I would like to get figured out is working with USB thumb drives and or USB external drives in different capacities. I tried again to get the backup and restore tool to work but feel I may have an improperly formatted USB thumb drive.
  • How does the group manage formatting drives in RPI?
There has to be a smooth tool and process that is out there to use... Maybe another amazing GUI.... Just a thought.... Lol

Anyhow thanks for the group's help last night and I look forward to seeing what's next.
A

I'll have to look but I think gparted works on the pi, it's my default gui based disk management software I go to when I want to do something with the disks

I did find some material that shared the same. So I guess if that's the go-to solution for a GUI-based user then I need to familiarize myself with the tool. I have a series of external drives and USB drives that will all be being put into service with the digital nodes. Shall we set up another evening round table how-to time or maybe even Saturday morning 09:00?

Just kicking out ideas...

Andy can you clarify what the issues are that your having.  Are these compatibility issue between operating systems?

No clue what the problem is. The RPI won't back up to the USB thumb drive or an external USB drive...

Your guess is as good as mine.

What are your drives formatted as?

Andy,

Does the USB drive appear as desktop icon when you plug it into the Pi?

1) If yes, then open a Terminal and run this command:

df -h --output | grep -E "^Filesystem|/media/pi"

For example, on my Pi an attached USB drive appears like this:

pi@nexuspi4b-ag7gn:~ $ df -h --output | grep -E "^Filesystem|/media/pi"
Filesystem Type Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Size Used Avail Use% File Mounted on
/dev/sda2 exfat 0 0 0 - 60G 2.8G 57G 5% - /media/pi/NEK_64GB

That tells me it’s formatted as ‘exfat’, which is what you want to see. If your drive is not exfat, unplug it, insert it into your Windows PC and use whatever tool Windows has to format it as exfat (1 partition). If it is exfat, let us know here.

2) If no, unplug the USB drive from your Pi, insert it into your Windows PC and use whatever tool Windows has to format it as exfat (1 partition).

That’s the easy path. I won’t attempt to describe using gparted or fdisk on the Pi to format the drive - too much typing!

Can do.
The USB is in the Pi. I tried remoting in to give it a try but no cigar. I will look again when I get home tonight.

Thanks!

So I had some bad luck and some good luck

Bad Luck
  • Was able to use your directions and Steve and figured out my USB was FAT32 I think.
  • Moved it to exFat and tried again
  • Apparently, the USB I have is locked I think
  • Tried many different ways to unlock it with no success
Good Luck
  • Plugged in a new USB drive and it worked on the first try
The part I don't like is I still have no clue how to fix the problem... (Head Palm).
Tonight I should have a bit more time and I'm going to give it a try again.

This might help a bit:

Individual files on a FAT32 drive can't be over 4GB in size—that's the maximum. A FAT32 partition must also be less than 8TB, which admittedly is less of a limitation unless you're using super-high-capacity drives.

The FAT32 file system’s age has advantages and disadvantages. The big advantage is that because it’s so old, FAT32 is the de-facto standard. Flash drives you purchase will often come formatted with FAT32 for maximum compatibility across not just modern computers, but other devices like game consoles and anything with a USB port.

Limitations come with that age, however. Individual files on a FAT32 drive can’t be over 4GB in size—that’s the maximum. A FAT32 partition must also be less than 8TB, which admittedly is less of a limitation unless you’re using super-high-capacity drives.

While FAT32 is okay for USB flash drives and other external media—especially if you know you’ll be using them on anything other than Windows PCs—you won’t want to FAT32 for an internal drive. It lacks the permissions and other security features built into the more modern NTFS file system. Also, modern versions of Windows can no longer be installed to a drive formatted with FAT32; they must be installed to drives formatted with NTFS.
