My partner and I are assessing our garden and trying to figure out why all of our spring plantings/growth is stunted. May be all of the shade, the pines competing for nutrients, that our soil is lacking nutrients, etc.

We were brainstorming options for having someone consult and it occurred to me that this list may include some folks who would be willing to visit our home in North Portland.

If you're willing to give us your thoughts and suggestions, we'll treat you to wine and appetizers!

We're looking to do this is as soon as possible so we can get our summer plantings in for fall harvest!

Best, Dani (and Heather)

Hi Dani,

If you have a lot of pines, your soil ph may be too low. Have you had a soil test done? It's inexpensive and very worth it.

Lime would certainly help "sweeten " up the acidic soil.
Sounds like you need more of a sunny place for a garden.
I had the soil tested before I started my garden. It was only $35 ,and yes a big help!I received a soil fertility guidelines, and an easy to read graphical soil analysis report.

Hi Dani and Heather,  I would love to see your garden.  I left a message, so reply here, or give me a call if you still need help.  There's lots you can grow in somewhat shady gardens - most of the leafy greens and even zucchini do pretty well with 4-5 hours of direct sun.  I generally advise people with new sites to try lasagna style gardening, or to work in as much compost as you can lay hands on and then mulch, mulch, mulch.

This group used to do garden visits.  Sometimes it was to offer ideas for gardens in need of help, sometimes to see what others were doing.  If there's interest, we could start up visits again?

Yes!!! I would love your visit and advice, Jill. I sense we need to be working in more amendments whether it be compost or mulch or other minerals like kelp. When are you available? By chance, this weekend? We are looking to get some eyes on the garden as soon as possible. Please let me know when you are available and how I can reach you. Best and thanks for your willingness! Dani (and Heather)
