Hi Gardeners,

My tomatoes are just starting to perk up, with the slightly warmer weather.  But I'm having to replant and figure out new strategies to contend with a swelling population of cute bunnies, and I think chipmunks, squirrels and field mice, who have eaten the majority of what I've planted this year.  Throw in gophers, voles, scrub and Stellar jays too, and it is a dilemma.  There was total crop disappearance of my initial plantings of peas, carrots and most of the greens just as they sprouted, plus the bunny has discovered brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) and sunflowers I've set out.  I much prefer slugs!

For anyone in the Portland/Vancouver area interested, NW VEG is having a veganic gardening powerpoint talk/discussion following our potluck this Thursday, June 28th.  You're welcome to come to both, or just the talk.  Dinner at 6:30pm, talk right around 7:20pm. Details, go to our website www.nwveg.org or  click HERE

Hi Fellow Gardeners,

Does anyone have a personal recommendation for an effective and humane raccoon repellant? We have them here raiding our orchard, and now they are going after the corn bed.

Thanks,
Becky

No good ideas at all! Raccoon populations seem to build up and then collapse. We had a huge population for a few years but now I rarely see any and they no longer bother the garden. We do have deer fencing, so that might help?

Also - we're keeping this group going, but the bulk of conversations now take place on the "Veganic Gardening PDX" Group in Facebook.

Have you seen this?

Raccoons are digging up my garden and lawn:
Raccoons have a varied diet and sometimes find food sources in our gardens or lawn. Commercial or natural repellants can be used on small areas to deter raccoons. Commercially available animal repellants can be applied around the perimeter of affected areas of lawn or garden. Repellants are not species-specific and should be used with caution with outdoor pets. Scare tactics such as bright, blinking lights or a loud radio can be used in gardens to deter raccoons. Another option is the commercially available Scarecrow©, a motion triggered device that directs a powerful stream of water at unwanted visitors.
