Hi everyone,

I was just looking through some interesting new and revised titles from Chelsea Green Publishing and noticed that more authors are including how to increase garden fertility without manure. Even Eliot Coleman is getting on board with his latest revision of The New Organic Grower. I also noticed in a new title "Hot Beds" (about growing in the very early season directly on a hot compost pile) that alternatives to manure are included.
It's exciting to see people who are considered leaders in gardening and small scale farming addressing the fact that manure is not needed for producing healthy plants.
Just thought I would share.

Wow--that’s so encouraging!  Thanks for sharing.  It’s so important that this info gets out to the general public.

BTW:  A new NW Veg member, Catherine, is interested in veganic gardening and recently asked me what I use for fertilizing my seedlings/starts.  Currently, I’m using a commercial Liquid Seaweed solution, which seems to be working.  Are there any other suggestions/successes?

I was recently thinking that it would be so great if we could get together some day this spring.  I’ve got lots of seeds and some starts to share.  Any interest out there?

Hello All. Very excited to join this group. If the group gets together to do a seed swap,  please let me know. BTW does this group belong to a meet up?

Catherine,

Welcome!  NW VEG does have a Meetup group (Viva La Vegan) where we could promote meetings, if whoever is hosting a gathering is interested.  When we're meeting in private homes/gardens, that can be iffy.

I also have a lot of seeds to share,  I'm up for a Friday or Saturday evening, or daytime during the week.

Jill

Friday or Saturday evenings, or daytime during the week—all would work for me!

Advertising on Meetup might work, if we limit the numbers.  Might be overwhelmed (which might be good or bad).

You could do a meet-up and limit the number plus use a public location like peoples or taborspace.

Could also potentially have the meeting here at Cascadia, if the date works for reserving our common house :) That way we could accommodate more folks.

Thank you Marsha for the offer!  Cascadia would be a great place to meet.  To keep the ball rolling--I was thinking that sometime during the last two weeks of April (or first two weeks of May) might be a good time for a meeting—still a good time for seed planting and our warm weather starts will be ready to transplant.  Plus, it would give us time to organize and advertise the get-together/Meetup.  I’m also thinking that Friday or Saturday evening might be more doable for people than midday during the week.  Any thoughts on this?  And any availabilities Marsha?  (No pressure—we could also check with Ole and Maitre re. the availability at Kailash.)

Thanks for your interest.  I think this is a timely subject that many people (esp. vegans!) want to know more about.

Hi Jill we have met before! I am a member of  Viva La Vegan. I would not be able to host a meet up in my home but would surely like to share seeds. I dont have huge assortment but I do have some interesting ones. Maybe we could just meet at veggie grill or the library. Just throwing that out there.

Hi All,
I've been following the chatter and plan on attending. This is a chance for those of us who garden veganically, to share knowledge, and seeds!I'm with y'all.Would prefer May/weekend.
I have the garden ready to plant.I composted, added lime and alfalfa pellets, green sand- where needed.Just dug up the last potatoes from the ground, and am still harvesting over wintered kale and flower tops!!!Great for salads, stir fry or in smoothies. I will be planting peas next week,so I can plant again for a second harvest.I'm gonna buy some salad starts soon, hope the slugs don't notice.
Jill and Stephanie are the best!!! Thanks Ladies <3, Always very knowledgeable and helpful.

We're never going to find a time when everyone can make it.  If I'm unavailable, I can give seeds to someone else to take. (I will be out of town May 7 - 13 and really can't give up weekend daylight time for more meetings - unless you guarantee heavy rain! Evenings after dinner are best for me; a Friday night sounds good.

I think having it at Marsha's would be great, or Kailash if it is available.  We would need supplies to make packages for divvying up seeds and table/counter space too.  And I don't think we need a long lead time to schedule it - our discussion group list (and meet-up if we want to open it up) can go out quickly.  If we want to post it to NW VEG we could piggyback on the upcoming potluck email which should be going out next weekend.

Hi, I'd be interested in a seed exchange also!  Does anyone have some ground cherry tomato seeds? The end of April or early May for a meet-up would be great..

I've been using a soil supplement for the past few years called Vegan 3-2-2 (made by Down To Earth) and it seems to work well. It comes in a 6 or 7lb. box or 25 lb bag. The Portland Nursery carries it. But if you happen to be in Eugene, the Down To Earth store sells it for less.

Hi, All,

I've reserved Cascadia for Friday, May 3 (I said 6-8 pm but we can change that). It looks like Saturday May 4 is also available, if that's preferred, but I'd need to know soon before it gets snapped up. (John and I are out of town much of April.)

How does that work? Let me know :)

Carolyn,

I have some I collected from last year's crop.  I normally start them indoors in late Feb - this year a mouse ate my initial planting!  I could bring you some seed, or perhaps share some of my 2nd planting (which just came up) if they survive the mice.  And I also really like the Vegan Blend from Down to Earth.

Hi Jill,
I hope I can make the meeting, but I have another question.
Do you know a naturopath that you would recommend?
Thanks.

Hi Marsha,
I’m flexible.  Either May 3rd or 4th in the evening will work for me.
Thanks so much for arranging the space!
