This is a two-part e-mail:
First, I wanted to remind guys about stuff they should be
doing/considering over the summer, especially those of you who aren't in
Chicago and may be isolated from Ultimate and consequently might not know
what to do with yourselves.
The first thing to do is to get in great shape. This means getting on a
consistent weight-lifting program that you can take with you to school in
the fall (You have over two months to get strong and there are a lot
fewer distractions in the summer than there will be at school.). You
also should head down to a nearby field and do some plios and wind
sprints. Both of these are great for leg strength and quickness, and
wind sprints will help your respiratory recovery immensely, enabling you
to run longer and concentrate better late in tournaments. As for wind
sprints, 12-18 sprints of 40-60 yards is a great workout, especially in
the summer heat (Bring water!). Stukel recommends that you run until you
throw up, but Stukel's an idiot, but also very good at Ultimate.
The second thing to do is to work on your throws by any means necessary.
Use your dad or dog or friend to throw with. Teach them to throw a
forehand and they will be more likely to want to throw.(If you teach your
dog to throw a forehand, that would be sweet!) If you can't find anyone
to throw with, go down to a nearby field and throw by yourself. Bring as
many discs as possible and work on your hucks or throw to targets. I've
noticed that many football fields have those little orange mesh gates
during the summer which make great targets and there are also goal posts too.
The third thing to do if you're not playing summer league or club is to
find a pick-up game. I know that a lot of times kids gather at the local
high school to play disc. Granted, it's usually really bad disc, but you
will get a chance to throw and run around and people will marvel at your
"amazing" skills.
Here's the second part of the email...
Due to the success of our fantasy baseball league with five teams
(Nuprin, Callahan, Prash, Kinsella, and me) nip and tuck at the midway
point, Kinsella recommended that the Frisbee team have a fantasy football
league too. So I set up an online draft for late August. If you want to
sign up for the league, go to http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/.
Sign up for a private league. The league ID# is 65444 and the password
is "sweetlovin".
Sorry this was so long. I hope your summer's are going great!! I'm
already excited about next season.
