Intense thunderstorms occurred in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana during the late morning and afternoon of July 27, 2026. These storms produced at least 5 tornadoes in the NWS Chicago service area, which are detailed below. Additionally, these storms caused extensive straight-line wind damage across several locations in and near the Chicago metropolitan area. This included portions of southern Cook and eastern Will counties, including in and near the communities of Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Sauk Village, Steger, Crete, Monee, Frankfort, and Beecher, where 80-90+ mph wind gusts led to substantial tree damage and multiple instances of notable structural damage. We would like to thank our emergency management partners for their assistance in the damage information collection and survey process. A narrow corridor of primarily tree damage continued south-southeast across portions of Glen Ellyn. This damage included large branches that fell onto power lines and damaged some homes and a vehicle. Damage in this area was consistent with peak winds near 75 mph. The tornado continued southward, producing additional sporadic tree damage until it dissipated northwest of Glenbard West High School near the intersection of Hawthorne Boulevard and Park Boulevard. .Wheaton... Indiana Street and Campbell Avenue, where the tops of several softwood trees were snapped and numerous limbs were downed. Damage in this area was consistent with peak winds near 75 mph. The tornado continued southward, producing sporadic tree damage until it dissipated in the vicinity of Alchester Drive. Additional damage was noted in the area which was likely associated with a swath of damaging straight-line winds that moved through a few minutes after this tornado occurred. .Orland Park... The tornado then traveled southwestward across Bronson Cemetery and directly over the campus of Lewis University. Damage on the campus consisted of numerous downed and snapped tree limbs, damaged fencing material and to the dugout of a baseball field, and damage to an HVAC system on the roof of a building. The tornado appeared to lift near Renwick road. .Country Club Hills - Glenwood... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 110 mph Path Length /statute/: 11.43 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/27/2026 Start Time: 12:47 PM CDT Start Location: 1 NW Country Club Hills / Cook County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.5772 / -87.74. End Date: 07/27/2026 End Time: 01:03 PM CDT End Location: Glenwood / Cook County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.5475 / -87.6244 Survey Summary: The tornado appeared to start just east of Interstate 57 and moved eastward crossing Interstate 80 on the northwest side of Country Club Hills. The tornado then progressed northeastward through Hazel Crest downing trees and tree limbs and removing the roofing materials of multiple apartment buildings near Pottawatomie School. After crossing Interstate 80 again near the junction with Interstate 294, the tornado made an unusual counter- clockwise loop on the southwestern side of Harvey causing primarily tree and cosmetic structure damage. The tornado then rapidly accelerated southeastward and reached peak intensity while removing the roof of an industrial building just north of W 167 Street and causing exterior wall and roof damage to an apartment complex on 171st street in Hazel Crest. After crossing Interstate 80 for a third time, the tornado continued southeastward through the north side of Homewood. Four double-stacked intermodal containers weighing approximately 75 tons each were tipped over in a rail yard and numerous additional trees were damaged before the tornado lifted near the Glenwood Academy on the far northwest side of Glenwood. .Lynwood - Munster... Damage along the path was most severe in a neighborhood near Heritage Middle School where several homes sustained damage to exterior walls and roofs. The tornado continued northeastward causing primarily tree damage and cosmetic damage to structures while moving into Indiana before lifting on the the far west side of Munster. .Southern Cook and Eastern Will County Straight Line Winds... Determination: Straight Line Winds Estimated Peak Winds: 80 to 100 mph Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 2 Start Date: 07/27/2026 Start Time: 12:45 PM CDT Summary: Extreme straight-line winds impacted eastern Will County and southern Cook County as an intense supercell thunderstorm evolved into a compact bow echo. In Will County, the hardest hit areas were in Monee, Crete, Steger, Beecher, and University Park where wind gusts likely ranged from 80 to locally 100 mph. Widespread tree, structure, and power infrastructure damage was reported requiring extensive multi-day mutual aid for clean-up efforts. There was a near complete power loss in the area with reported damage being the worst experienced in several decades. Two injuries were reported in Beecher associated with an overturned semi- truck. Extensive tree damage was also reported in New Lenox, Frankfort, Frankfort Square, and Mokena where wind speeds likely exceeded 80 mph. In Cook County, the hardest hit areas were in Palos Heights, Markham, Flossmoor, and Chicago Heights where wind gusts likely exceeded 80 mph. Extensive snapped and uprooted trees occurred in these areas. It is possible that brief tornadoes beyond those confirmed occurred on the northern edge of the destructive wind swath in Cook County. .Lake County IL Straight Line Winds... Determination: Straight Line Winds Estimated Peak Winds: 80 to 90 mph Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/27/2026 Start Time: 3:30 PM CDT Summary: Destructive straight-line winds impacted portions of Lake County Illinois as a line of storms moved southward along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The strongest winds occurred between Interstate 94 and Lake Michigan near an apparent rear flank region of an embedded supercell. Damage started near Zion and extended southward through Waukegan, North Chicago, Lake Forest, and Deerfield. The most destructive damage was reported in Waukegan where a portion of a roof was blown off an apartment building on North Butrick Street and widespread trees were snapped and uprooted. The ASOS station at the Waukegan Airport measured an 82 mph wind gust before power was lost, and several hangers were damaged onsite. Many large trees were also downed near Lake Forest Academy and Deerfield. Intense supercells and clusters of thunderstorms occurred in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana during the late morning and afternoon of July 27, 2026. These storms produced at least 7 tornadoes in the NWS Chicago service area as well as destructive hail and straight-line winds. The overlap of the high intensity of the storms with the highly populated Chicago metropolitan area led to the event being unusually impactful to a large amount of people with widespread power outages lasting as long as a week. In addition, numerous injuries and an indirect fatality were reported as well. Two separate supercells produced hail larger than 2 inches in diameter during the severe weather episode. One supercell thunderstorm produced hail ranging in size between 2 and 2.75 inches in Downers Grove, Oak Brook, and Clarendon Hills. A separate supercell thunderstorm produced hail as large as 3 inches in diameter in Channahon and as swath of 2 to 2.5 inch diameter hail across Iroquois County. Additionally, extensive straight-line wind damage occurred across several locations in and near the Chicago metropolitan area. One supercell produced 80 to locally over 100 mph winds across portions of southern Cook and eastern Will counties. A 104 mph wind gust was measured in Monee, Illinois, which is one of the strongest measured wind gusts on record in the state of Illinois. Extreme damage was observed in several communities impacted by the supercell, including but not limited to Hazel Crest, Monee, Beecher, and Crete. A cluster of storms also produced wind gusts in excess of 80 mph in Lake County Illinois including a measured gust of 82 mph in Waukegan. Extensive tree damage was observed in this location, as well. End Date: 07/27/2026 End Time: 01:03 PM CDT End Location: Glenwood / Cook County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.5475 / -87.6244 Survey Summary: The tornado appeared to start just east of Interstate 57 and moved eastward crossing Interstate 80 on the northwest side of Country Club Hills. The tornado then progressed northeastward through Hazel Crest downing trees and tree limbs and removing the roofing materials of multiple apartment buildings along 171st Street. After crossing Interstate 80 again near the junction with Interstate 294, the tornado made an unusual counter-clockwise loop on the southwestern side of Harvey causing primarily tree and cosmetic structure damage. After reaching its northern-mmost point between W 154th Street and W 155th Street, the tornado looped back southward while rapidly accelerating as it reentered Markham and Hazel Crest. The tornado reached peak intensity here, removing the roof of an industrial building just north of W 167 Street and causing exterior wall and roof damage to an apartment complex on 171st street in Hazel Crest. After crossing Interstate 80 for a third time, the tornado continued southeastward through the north side of Homewood. Four double-stacked intermodal container rail cars weighing approximately 75 tons each were tipped over in a rail yard and numerous additional trees were damaged. The tornado caused more tree damage on the northwestern side of Glenwood before dissipating near the Glenwood Academy. Damage along the path was most severe in a neighborhood near Heritage Middle School where several homes sustained damage to exterior walls and roofs. The tornado continued northeastward causing primarily tree damage and cosmetic damage to structures while moving into Indiana before lifting on the the far west side of Munster. Two injuries were reported in Lansing as a result of this tornado. .Southern Cook and Eastern Will County Straight Line Winds... Determination: Straight Line Winds Estimated Peak Winds: 80 to 100 mph Fatalities: 1 Injuries: 2 Start Date: 07/27/2026 Start Time: 12:45 PM CDT Summary: Extreme straight-line winds impacted eastern Will County and southern Cook County as an intense supercell thunderstorm evolved into a compact bow echo. In Will County, the hardest hit areas were in Monee, Crete, Steger, Beecher, and University Park where wind gusts ranged from 80 to locally over 100 mph. A wind gust of 104 mph was measured at Bulk Airport in Monee, which is one of the strongest measured wind gusts on record in the state of Illinois. Widespread tree, structure, and power infrastructure damage was reported requiring extensive multi-day mutual aid for clean-up efforts. There was a near complete power loss in the area with reported damage being the worst experienced in several decades. Two injuries were reported in Beecher associated with an overturned semi-truck. An indirect fatality was reported in Steger owing to carbon monoxide poisoning associated with the use of a generator. Extensive tree damage was also reported in New Lenox, Frankfort, Frankfort Square, and Mokena where wind speeds likely exceeded 80 mph. In Cook County, the hardest hit areas were in Palos Heights, Markham, Flossmoor, and Chicago Heights where wind gusts likely exceeded 80 mph. Extensive snapped and uprooted trees occurred in these areas. It is possible that brief tornadoes beyond those confirmed occurred on the northern edge of the destructive wind swath in Cook County. .Lake County IL Straight Line Winds... The strongest winds occurred between Interstate 94 and Lake Michigan near an apparent rear flank region of an embedded supercell. Damage started near Zion and extended southward through Waukegan, North Chicago, Lake Forest, and Deerfield. The most destructive damage was reported in Waukegan where a portion of a roof was blown off an apartment building on North Butrick Street and widespread trees were snapped and uprooted. The ASOS station at the Waukegan Airport measured an 82 mph wind gust before power was lost, and several hangers were damaged onsite. Many large trees were also downed near Lake Forest Academy and Deerfield. Intense supercells and clusters of thunderstorms occurred in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana during the late morning and afternoon of July 27, 2026. These storms produced at least 7 tornadoes in the NWS Chicago service area as well as destructive hail and straight-line winds. The overlap of the high intensity of the storms with the highly populated Chicago metropolitan area led to the event being unusually impactful to a large amount of people with widespread power outages lasting as long as a week. In addition, numerous injuries and an indirect fatality were reported as well. Two separate supercells produced hail larger than 2 inches in diameter during the severe weather episode. One supercell thunderstorm produced hail ranging in size between 2 and 2.75 inches in Downers Grove, Oak Brook, and Clarendon Hills. A separate supercell thunderstorm produced hail as large as 3 inches in diameter in Shorewood and a swath of 2 to 2.5 inch diameter hail across Iroquois County. Additionally, extensive straight-line wind damage occurred across several locations in and near the Chicago metropolitan area. One supercell produced 80 to locally over 100 mph winds across portions of southern Cook and eastern Will counties. A 104 mph wind gust was measured near Monee, Illinois, which is one of the strongest measured wind gusts on record in the state of Illinois. Extreme damage was observed in several communities impacted by the supercell, including but not limited to Hazel Crest, Monee, Beecher, and Crete. A cluster of storms also produced wind gusts in excess of 80 mph in Lake County, Illinois, including a measured gust of 82 mph in Waukegan. Liberty Drive and S. Washington Street south of Wheaton College. A concentrated corridor of damage was noted, particularly in the vicinity of E. Indiana Street and Campbell Avenue and along Pershing Avenue where the tops of several softwood trees were snapped and numerous limbs were downed. Damage in this area was consistent with peak winds near 75 to 80 mph. The tornado continued southward, producing sporadic tree damage until it dissipated in the vicinity of Alchester Drive. Damage along the path of the tornado consisted of snapped and uprooted trees and downed tree branches. The tornado appeared to lift over McCollum Park. This tornado was within a broader region of straight line winds and was identified by a corridor of locally more intense wind damage with tree branches torn from the tops of trees as well as a subtle radar debris signature visible on KLOT radar imagery. .Orland Park...
