...NWS Damage Survey for 6/20/2025 Barnes County Tornadoes...

It is important to note these results are preliminary and subject to 
change pending further evaluation. NWS damage survey results take 
into account damage intensity for scientifically proven damage 
indicators. If and when more damage evidence is available, further 
evaluation of the damage intensity will be investigated.

Two tornadoes were surveyed in western and central Barnes County 
North Dakota. Accurate track information and width have yet to be
determined, but will be finalized over the upcoming days. Based 
on the survey of damaged homes north of Urbana and south of Valley
City, and in coordination with national experts both tornadoes 
now have preliminary ratings of EF-2 for a maximum rating. 
Updates will be provided as more information comes in over the 
upcoming weeks.

The first tornado initially developed in far eastern Stutsman
County about 2 miles east-northeast of Spiritwood, and tracked 
northeast missing the community of Urbana in Barnes County to the
northwest. It continued this northeast track causing high end EF-2
damage to 2 homes approximately 1 mile apart. It then turned 
north then northwest as it weakened and eventually dissipated.

The second tornado developed in central Barnes County 5 miles 
southwest of Valley City and tracked southeast, caused EF-0 and
EF-1 damage to trees and several homes. It continued over a ridge
crossing the Sheyenne River, then caused EF-1 and EF-2 damage to 
several homes eventually before lifting 3 miles south of Valley 
City.

Survey Summary: About 1 mile northeast of Urbana the first home 
damaged in the track lost its first floor except for interior 
walls near the inner stairwell, while the lower structure remained
in tact. A nearby Morton steel shed was destroyed along with 
several smaller sheds. Multiple vehicles that were parked in or near
the buildings were damaged and moved shorter distances, but at 
least three were rolled and thrown close to 0.25 mile after being 
crushed along an arc to the south and east of the buildings. Tree
and young crop damage was observed along the path as it continued
northeast 1 mile when it hit the second home. This was verbally
relayed to be a 1893 homestead with a few newer sheds near and an
older barn. All walls were destroyed or collapsed into the home, 
with interior walls still standing. The nearby barn and newer 
sheds were completely destroyed. Trees were snapped and sheared at
10 to 15 feet, and two tree stumps were partially debarked on the
windward side near the home.

Survey Summary: 3 miles southwest of Valley City trees were
observed with large broken branches with tree damage increasing
near several homes. Both homes had minor shingle and roof damage
and siding damage. 1 home had a collapsed garage and part of the
roof porch damaged. After the tornado crossed the ridge just to
the west of the Sheyenne river it caused widespread damage to
trees as it continued southeast where it damaged up to 4 homes 3
miles to the south of Valley City before lifting. The highest
damage was with a home with collapse exterior walls on the top
floor and complete roof destruction, along with the complete
collapse and destruction of the garage. A nearby carport and shed
was partially collapsed. The home to the south mainly had roof and
siding damage, with one exterior wall pushed in. Much of the other
damage to nearby homes were to windows, siding, and shingles.
Tree damage continued with some large and mainly smaller branches
across the road from these homes as the tornado likely lifted.

Survey Summary: First visible indication of the tornado occurred
via a photo report time stamped at 1020pm. The tornado tracked
across 117th Ave SE and damaged 3 power poles. Continued to the 
NE turning to the north evidenced via satellite imagery where it 
reached its maximum width of 350 yards in an open field. From
there it turned back to the NW and struck the farm house and grove
of trees. This is where the peak damage indicators show winds
around 120 mph. As the tornado roped out another power pole was
damaged to the northwest of the farmstead.

Survey Summary: This tornado tracked SE across rural southern 
Cass county lasting about 7 minutes and tracking for almost 7 
miles across mostly open country. The only damage indicators where
trees in shelter belts. Track and width were assessed via
satellite imagery. Scour marks in the field reached 100 yards at
its max.

Survey Summary: Video and photo evidence was used to confirm this
nearly stationary tornado. This tornado remained in open country
with no damage observed as it tracked slowly southeast for roughly
a half a mile.
