This Public Information Statement includes updated findings on 4 tornadoes that had previously been confirmed and new information on 6 additional tornadoes that have been confirmed from the March 10, 2026 severe weather event after an extensive analysis of video and drone footage, radar data, and high-resolution satellite imagery. .Overview... During the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, March 10th, a supercell thunderstorm produced a family of tornadoes across the Kankakee River Valley. Based on a combination of in-person damage surveys, storm spotter videos, radar data, drone footage, and high-resolution satellite imagery, NWS Chicago has confirmed a total of 10 tornadoes in our area of responsibility. Two additional tornadoes occurred in the area of responsibility for NWS Northern Indiana, bringing the total produced by the supercell to 12. We would like to thank all of our partners who assisted us with our damage surveys, including the Kankakee, Newton, and Jasper County EMAs. We would also like to extend our gratitude to all of the storm spotters, storm chasers, and members of the public who provided photos and videos of the tornadoes and damage that they caused for our post-storm analysis. .Pontiac... Rating: EF3 Estimated Peak Wind: 160 mph Path Length /statute/: 35.62 miles Path Width /maximum/: 1550 yards Fatalities: 3 Injuries: 11 Start Date: 03/10/2026 Start Time: 06:21 PM CDT Start Location: 3 SSW Kankakee / Kankakee County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.0779 / -87.8856 End Date: 03/10/2026 End Time: 07:39 PM CDT End Location: 3 W De Motte / Jasper County / IN End Lat/Lon: 41.1992 / -87.2562 Survey Summary: This tornado began just north of W 3000S Road southwest of Kankakee, IL, about one mile east of State Route 115. The tornado intensified while traveling east-northeastward into the far southern section of the city of Kankakee in the vicinity of Route 45, where concentrated higher end EF-1 tree damage and structural damage was observed. The tornado intensified while moving across E 2500S Road, destroying a two-story home and several metal farm buildings, consistent with EF-3 caliber wind speeds. Concentrated extreme tree damage was noted, with numerous large hardwood trees snapped, stubbed, or uprooted despite lacking leaves, likely due to extensive debris lofting in the area. After crossing I-57 and the Kankakee River, the tornado rapidly increased in size, producing a swath of significant damage in and near northern portions of Aroma Park. In this area, multiple homes were heavily damaged to an estimated EF-2 intensity. The tornado's peak width occurred here and was estimated to be approximately 1550 yards. Ground survey and aerial imagery suggests that the tornado further intensified as it tracked east-southeast before crossing the Kankakee River again. Within a narrow 150-200 yard wide section along S. Sandbar Road to the northeast of Aroma Park, three homes were completely destroyed, consistent with EF-3 caliber winds, and multiple others were heavily damaged and rendered uninhabitable. A heavy pickup truck parked in front of the garage of one of the destroyed homes was moved over 100 feet into a ditch next to the driveway, possibly being spun around the remnants of a small tree before reaching the ditch. In addition, on the other side of Sandbar Road, a crossover type SUV appeared to have been rolled onto the adjacent property and deposited onto a pile of debris just north of a heavily damaged residence. Along the swath of the most intense structural damage, concentrated extreme tree damage was noted, with numerous large hardwood trees snapped, stubbed, or uprooted despite lacking leaves, likely owing to extensive flying debris. Along Sandbar Road and through the Kankakee Elks Golf Course, the tornado s width was estimated at near 1500 yards. The tornado then continued generally east to east-northeast towards the Indiana state line, downing numerous additional trees, causing occasional structural damage, and flipping irrigation pivots as it moved just north of the communities of Wichert and Hopkins Park. While crossing into Newton County between W 800 N Road and W 900 N Road near N 650 W Road, the tornado destroyed multiple outbuildings and significantly damaged multiple homes. On N 600 W Road, multiple homes were completely destroyed with debris blown clear of the foundations, consistent with EF-3 caliber winds. Nearby forested areas had almost all trees snapped or uprooted with some trees remaining standing with only stubs of a few large branches remaining, likely due to extensive lifted debris. Multiple homes were damaged, and a farm outbuilding was destroyed along N 500 W Road and along and near N 400 W Road. As the tornado crossed US-41 into the south side of Lake Village, it widened to approximately 1100 yards while damaging the roof and canopy of a gas station and a nearby retail building. Further north along N 300 W Road, multiple blocks of homes had significant roof damage and almost all trees were uprooted or snapped. The tornado continued eastward into a wooded area near the Lugene Links Golf Course, where a continuous corridor of trees was entirely uprooted. As the tornado neared W 950 N Road and N 150 W Road, a few homes were damaged, and a farm outbuilding was completely destroyed. The tornado continued to produce damage to trees and outbuildings as it traveled northeastward through mainly rural portions of northern Newton County and northern portions of Roselawn. The tornado crossed into far northwestern Jasper County between W 1100 N Road and W 1200 N Road. Along N 1200 W Road just east of I-65, a continuous corridor of trees was entirely uprooted, a few outbuildings were damaged, and the roof was removed from a house. In the community of Forest City, a continuous corridor of trees was uprooted, and a few residences had shingles removed. The tornado diminished in intensity as it moved northeast toward N 1100 W Road, and then dissipated just south of the intersection of N 1100 W Road and W 1300 N Road. .Sun River Terrace 1... Storm chaser video looking southeast from IL-17 captured the development of the tornado, which initially moved southwestward for about 30 seconds before becoming obscured by rain. Clear swirl marks (including several loops) were evident in a field north of S. Sandbar Road in Gray Sky satellite imagery near the start of the tornado. As the tornado continued southward, it uprooted a grove of trees in the vicinity of S. Sandbar Road, consistent with wind speeds near 90 mph. Sporadic tree damage was noted in high-resolution satellite imagery south of the Kankakee River, just to the east of a subdivision on Bittersweet Drive, before the tornado dissipated. .Sun River Terrace 2...
