Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 90 mph Path Length /statute/: 2.48 miles Path Width /maximum/: 75 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/02/2026 Start Time: 04:56 PM CDT Start Location: Huron / Beadle County / SD Start Lat/Lon: 44.3697 / -98.2237 End Date: 07/02/2026 End Time: 05:01 PM CDT End Location: 2 E Huron / Beadle County / SD End Lat/Lon: 44.3686 / -98.1736 Survey Summary: An intermittent ground circulation was observed by the public south of U.S. Highway 14 from approximately one-half mile west of Dakota Ave N to near Custer Ave NE. The tornado damaged an outbuilding and produced minor tree damage. The tornado was rated EF1 with an estimated peak wind of 90 mph. The tornado was quickly followed by prolonged destructive straight- line winds, which were responsible for the majority of damage across the city of Huron and surrounding areas. The Huron Regional Airport (KHON) reported a 90 mph wind gust at 4:56 pm CDT and then a 106 mph gust at 5:03 pm CDT before the observing site lost power and stopped reporting. Portions of Huron experienced wind gusts of 90 to 100 plus mph for at least seven minutes, resulting in widespread damage to trees, power lines, and some structures. Winds of this intensity are equivalent to an EF1 tornado. These destructive winds were not confined to just Huron. The South Dakota Road Weather Information System observing site near the intersection of Highway 37 and 221st St approximately 8 miles east of Alpena reported severe wind gusts of at least 63 mph or greater from 4:52 pm CDT to 5:07 pm CDT with 90 mph gusts reported at 4:57 pm CDT and again at 5:02 pm CDT.
