...NWS Damage Survey for 09/04/2025 Tornado Event..

A thunderstorm moved through far Northern Oneida County around 6 
PM on September 4th. It had broad rotation that tightened up as it
approached Ava NY. A weak tornado touched down just before 6 pm 
and traveled 3 miles and on the ground for approximately 8 
minutes.

The first area of damage that was surveyed was off of Vary Rd 
west of Ava with a few trees down as well as scattered tree debris
that fell in a convergent pattern with trees on the south side of
the path falling N and the trees on the north end of the path 
falling S. The property owner was home at the time and relayed 
that the winds picked up and all the leaves in the yard were 
swirling around and they could hear trees snapping. There were 
more trees that were down in the forest farther to the SW that 
could not be accessed. 

The next stop was in the town of Ava where there was damage that 
indicated 80 mph winds. A chicken coop was lofted and set down 
several yards from its original location as well as a large tree 
that fell on a pig pen. Once again trees on the south side of the 
property fell north and the trees on the north side of the 
property fell south. There was no damage to the house on the 
property and damage to the outbuildings were mostly from falling 
trees. Property owners were at home at the time and saw clouds 
moving fast from south to north before hearing the wind suddenly 
pick up and hearing several trees fall. Winds hit the house and 
damaged a door on a shed that got torn open. 

The last location that had any damage was at a farm house a 
little over a mile to the east of Ava where a large, partly rotten
tree fell on the house. Minor damage occurred to the property 
from the tree falling on it but no visible wind damage was seen. 
With the tree being weak and no other significant tree damage in 
the vicinity and no more visible damage to the east, this was 
determined to be roughly the end of the tornado's path.
