A line of thunderstorms approaching McAlester rapidly organized
and developed a strong push of wind as it approached Pyle
Mountain. Those winds contributed to the development of a large
squall line circulation (QLCS) and resulted in the development of
a tornado near Pyle Mountain. The tornado traveled east-south,
crossing the Indian Nations Turnpike, and moved into the area around
the State Penitentiary. Minor damage occurred at the McAlester-
Pittsburg County Emergency Operations Center. The strong push of
wind, that initially contributed to the development of the
tornado, strengthen further and became the dominate feature. The
tornado dissipated in north McAlester after crossing north Main
Street. At the same time, wind damage was increasing across
McAlester. A swath of 85 to 95 mph winds (similar in strength to
the winds in the tornado) moved from southwest McAlester across
the east part of the downtown area badly damaging two brick
buildings. Wind damaged continued into Krebs. Many trees were
downed due to the combination of the tornado and winds. Many
homes and businesses were damaged from falling trees and the
force of the wind. Power outages occurred in many parts of the
McAlester area. We greatly appreciated the tour of the area
provided by the McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency
Management.

change pending final review of the events and publication in
